Almost a week out..doing great

I'm feeling great today. I had LAP RNY last Wednesday. I'm walking , siping and even went on some errands with hubby yesterday. My Dr.'s post op diet is 1 protein shake a day until my first post op visit (10/22). I'm doing that everyday. The water is a bit harder, but I'm getting between 24 and 30oz. trying to increase it everyday as i stay awake more hours. I also have a few sugar free popsicles and they should count as fluids.

Anyway, with my extremely low intake of "food" I still have not had a BM...I know TMI, but is this normal? I don't feel like I need to go and gas is moving through just fine.

any advice is welcome..thanks

Christy

Christy,

Glad you are doing well.  Walking around and doing a few errands when you can will aid in your recovery.  Great job on the protein shakes and kudos for "trying" to get the wter/fluids in.  Yep, the SF popsicles do count.  It is hard to do it but as long as you try your best that is good enough.  Keep trying and you will get there!

Christy,

Glad to see you posting. Good about the walking and sipping. The more you walk, the more you drink and the more gas you pass the quicker you'll have the bm. SF pops are great sources. Things will get better and better as the days pass. Keep us posted.

Christy,

You are doing great!!!!  I found that using CL helped me get more water in right after surgery.  I felt like my mouth tasted nasty and the water just made it worse.

I wouldn't worry about the bm as long as you are still having gas.  I mean, you are only having one protein drink a day and water, what are you putting into yourself that would generate anything!!!  If you are worried you can always add a little fiber to your water.  Benefiber makes a powder that dissolves completely and doesn't have any flavor.  My nut told me to start taking fiber when I got home from surgery.  But add it slowly!!!!  Too much can cause problems.

Keep up the great work!!!!

Hi Chrissty, I so glad that you posted. Sounds like you are doing good for the first week out. And as the other folks said SF popsicles do count as fluids, I ate alot of them the first 2 months. I used crystal light as the water just didn't  taste that good. You are doing great.  Thanks for posting.

When they put you to sleep, your bowel went to sleep too. It can take a while for it to get back to full tilt especially since it was ":assaulted". The shake you are using has some fiber in it and with movement and water it will wake up soon. If you are passing gas, it means your digestive system is waking up. Call the Dr. if you stop passing gas.

Also, you were pretty well empty going in to surgery, its going to take a few days to build up enough "stuff" to start moving through. (TMI)

Keep up the good work!!

Happy to hear that you are doing great.
I know that with each passing day I would feel better and better.
Im sorry I dont know what to say about about the BM I had my first the day after coming home. But then again I was not on such a strange diet before the surgery.  I cannot believe the doctor is not letting you eat solid food yet.  Good luck with everything.
  Take Care,
 Christine

Christine,

Depending on your doctor depends on when you get solid food again.  I had no preop diet and then two weeks of three protein shakes a day then two weeks of stage one then two weeks of stage two then I was cleared to eat almost anything...within reason.  I chose to stay on full liquids and stage one a lot longer because I had two strictures.  I believe the full liquids are better so you have more of a chance to heal.  At the early stage out your new pouch does not have the nerve feeling and it is much easier to over eat and stretch your pouch.  Don't overdo it!

So glad you are doing well!  I think I told you about my issues with going to the bathroom after my surgery.  Definitely benefiber and liquid colace (you can get an Rx for it, but it is nasty) can help.  Try to start doing something now about it before you get "backed up".  I'm just talking from experience, lol.  Sounds like you are doing excellent.

Congrats. I think you are doing great. I would just say keep up the good work. I know walking and getting out of the house helped me alot.
