I'm looiking for recommendations for a NP or doctor in the Charlottesville area who is willing to do this and is good at this...I need someone to order and monitor my blood tests for vitamins, iron, minerals, thyroid, etc. Someone familiar with the system of someone who had gastric bypass. Someone to help me keep track of where I am and how to get where I need to be.  My PCP is not all that familiar with WLS, the person who currently monitors my thyroid is not either. My surgeon's office (he is not longer there but his partner) wants someone else monitoring this. I am 3 years out now and have just been asking different providers to order tests and trying to figure this out on my own.

Thanks for any suggestions on who to approach or how you are handling this.

Hello and welcome!  I am not in Charlottesville but wanted to let you know that your surgeon should still be seeing you once a year to check blood work and your PCP should be monitoring as well.  When I had surgery I knew I was a patient of the surgeons office for life and that I would be required to come back annually to have blood work done and a checkup.  I have had issues with my Vit D being low so I have things checked more often by my PCP.  Currently I am also having it checked by my OBGYN.  Since I am pregnant I wanted to keep things exactly where they should be!  Good luck!

Hi Torrie,
Welcome to Charlottesville. I, too have had RNY with Dr. Schirmer. He and my PCP keep track of my levels. In fact, my PCP detected a Vitamin D deficiency. Most Family Medicine physicians are aware of what is needed for gastric bypass patients as both UVA and Martha Jefferson have bariatric surgeons.
If you are interested in finding a PCP in the Charlottesville area, contact Family Medicine of Albemarle.
   Best of luck to you.
