The phone rang at 5:30 to wake me up. I got outta bed and I had made a deal with the devil. I was on coffee duty for my dear friend Allison and myself .. this race morning. So I threw my race stuff on and sleepy eyed wondered down to the starbucks of the hotel.. (Gotta have java!) The line was already out the door!!! 20 min late and java in hand... back up stairs for 1/2 a mini bagel, cream cheese and banana... photo shots and out the door we went..
We knew it would be dark so we decided to cab it, but we came upon the main street and it was blocked. So we decided to walk up Ben Franklin Blvd (see pictures) to the start...
After 3 hours and 11 minuites and 08 seconds, I crossed the finish line of the ING Philadelphia 1/2 marathon. Miles 1 and 2 were a bit of a concern as I got a painful pinch/stitch in my side which I never get, but I wasn't huffing and puffing. I focused on relaxing and deep breaths and it went away... Thank Goodness! Otherwise it was going to be a long 13.1 miles! We stopped for some fun photo ops, which helped as it took me to mile 3 or 4 to really shake out the cobwebs ... I was feeling a bit heavy... We toured old town philly and then back down the parkway... along the river for miles 5, 6, 7 8 and turnaround at 9 to come back down the river by the boat houses...
Bag pipers and lots of crowd support (whom I made smile!!) were along the way, keeping us grooving. About mile 6 the body was a little cranky, by mile 8/9 the hamstrings were saying what the heck... by 11 the pain of what was 13.1 miles had officially set in, but I kept trucking... Mind over matter. That wouldn't have happened 9 months ago... let alone 2, 3, 4 years ago.
It was beautiful weather, slight breeze and beautiful fall sun.. I really couldn't have asked for better weather. I realized I was around people the entire time! This was not normal for me, I used to jog a little back before when I was running heavier at 225 - 245 I was almost if not last,!
I got to play leap frog with some folks and use others as pacers for myself ... I got to enjoy the course, the race and the people...
So my friends and OH Family, Achieve your dreams, a rocky is in you... your finish line awaits :)
I couldn't have done this with out each of you supporting me with the new plumbing, mind and spirit!!!
XOXO
