This Whey or no whey

I’m so confused about PROTEIN products being sold on the various websites. They say they have large amounts of protein, but what kind of protein? Is it soy – milk – whey, and does it matter? After a consultation a nutritionist who is connected with my Bariatric doctor, I was told I need at least 60 grams a day of protein from meat, milk, eggs etc. (which I find very difficult since I’m eating less these days). And I could supplement with liquid protein, only if it was 100% Whey protein. The mess with mixing the whey powders and the inconvenience of it all has taken a toll on me so I tried the liquid versions. The ingredients of New-Whey, Atkins, and Pure Protein and are milk protein not whey protein and they taste pretty bad. And what is Pre-Digested Protein  - yuck! Have you found a big difference between the Proteins – Or is protein protein. Is one just as good as the other?

I have found a difference and use Whey protein as directed by my surgeons office.  I use Unjury, Any Whey and Sport Pharma Whey for most of my uses.  They are all fairly priced and easy to mix.  I also buy the meal replacements from Bariatric Advantage.  They come in a shaker bottle and all you do is pop the top and add water.  If you like "fruity" flavors, Nectar is good but I personally don't like it as much as the others.  I could probably direct you as to where to order or receive free samples of some of the proteins.  Let me know!

Any Whey is sold at Vitamin Shoppe and is the ONLY protein that withstands heat/cooking/baking.  I add it to a lot of foods.

Sport Pharma Whey is sold at Costco in a huge canister for $20.00.  One jug lasts me six months.

Any Whey is unflavored and is good added to food such as yogurt and cottage cheese to boost their protein.  It is stable and can be used to cook with, too.

Pre-digested protein just means the amino acid chains have been broken so they are shorter and more readily absorbed.

I found the ready to drink versions a bit pricey and still use the whey protein powder mixed with FF milk for breakfast.  I bought 16 oz Rubbermaid shaker bottles, mix the drink before I leave home, refrigerate it at work, then drink it after I finish coffee.  One scoop of powder (27 g protein) in 6 oz of milk gives you half of your daily requirement of protein.  Even with the small amount of food you can eat now, you should be able to get in another 30 g between snacks and meals.

Good luck!

It can be confusing, and everyone has different tastes.  After trying many of them, I have settled on Unjury proteins.  They can be found at unjury.com.  I hope that helps.  :)

Yes, I have and liked them a lot for several months post op.  I used the Isopure bottled drinks....just check, because some have carbs.  You may find that post op, your tastes will change. You might want to just try samples (companies like www.BariatricEating.com have them) to get an idea of what you would like, but don't be surprised if things change after the surgery.  Not sure why it happens, but I think a lot of WLS patients experience it.  :)

Whey protein is the best for us because we absorb it better.  I always like Isopure Zerocarb Dutch Chocolate.  Mixed with some milk.  Good luck finding some you like.
