Protein powders?

I have seen alot of info on the boards about different choices of protein powders/supplements, but I can't seem to find it now. A friend just brought me a sample of one she is on- by Metagenics. Its 15 gm of protein in 2 scoops and is soy with plant sterols. I haven't tried it yet, but am pre procedure and thought I'd find products I liked before surgery. Can anyone enlighten me about what to look for in a protein powder (besides taste) I know my dietitan will also go over this, but I'm trying to get as much info together as I can ahead of time.

Thanks,

The best type of protien for us RNY patients are Protien Isolates.  We are able to absorb this form of protien a lot eaiser then the rest.  I personally use Syntrax Nectar products and you buy those containers at Vitamin Shoppe.  They also have IsoPure there as well which is a Protien isolate.

Specifically Whey Protein Isolate. I use Syntrax Nectar, IMO the best stuff out there!

Yep, Whey Protein Isolates are definately they best for us post op.  I also use Nectar but unjury is awesome, too.  They have unflavored, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry as well as things like chicken soup.  The unflavored really is unflavored.  One important thing I wanted to mention is that your tastes really change after surgery.  You may find something you like now and then can not stand it after surgery so be careful and do not "stock up" too much.  Also, it is a good idea to up your protein now (pre op) to help aid in your recovery after surgery.  It really does help you to heal faster.  Good luck!

I see that the whey protein is milk based. I don't have an allergy, but don't tolerate milk products well, things like Slimfast and instant breakfast give me too much gas. Any suggestions about one that is not? How about a soy based? How does that compare?

Hiya,

Yes, whey protein isolates are the best protein for us. I use Unjury chocolate and some other proteins that are not powdered. But Tammy is right - tastes can change dramatically after surgery so you would be advised NOT to go purchasing a lot of anything.... I know you can buy samples of all different proteins at www.vitalady.com and see what kinds you like and don't like - now.... but just be aware that you may hate them during the first few weeks after surgery....

Also if you can't stand whey protein try to find some other protein that you do like because any protein is better than none! You absolutely need to take some kind of protein to make sure your body gets the correct nutrients as you drop all the weight in the first few months.

Good luck and well done for thinking ahead and trying to make sure you get everything all lined up - education is key!

I am totally lactose intolerant since WLS and Whey Protein isolate is my primary protein source.  The best bang for the buck I've found is Body Fortress at Walmart.  I used IsoPure at first but it is much more pricey.

Good luck to you. I second Tam on the tastes change after surgery so stocking up can backfire.

Also Whey protein can be mixed in many foods and liquids to make geting the protein in easier, or if you are desperate and just nee d to get it in, mix it with water or lactose free milk or 50/50 water diluted unsweetened apple juice,...but thats a RNY post-op first 2 weeks recovery thing.

A lot of the whey protiens (especially from Nectar) mix great with water or crystal light.  Since tastes do change stocking up can be difficult.  I ordered tons of samples & waited til after surgery to try them all.  Ended up only liking one, Isopure Zero Carb Dutch Chocolate and just  used that one.
