Happy Friday to all!

I am new to the forum and wanted to say hello. I am scheduled for an informational session for the Lap-Band Monday and was not sure what to expect. Has anyone out there had experience with Norfolk Surgical Group as well as Anthem BC of Virginia medical coverage?

Thanks for any input and enjoy your weekend!

Hello and welcome to the wonderful, loving and informative VA board!  I do not have any experience with Norfolk Surgical Group as I am a Richmond, VA native and patient however I do have TONS of experience with Anthem BC BS of VA.  That is my place of employment.  Coverage will most likely be based on medical necissity and what exclusions/provisions/riders that your policy has.  Let me know if you have any questions and again, Welcome.

Thanks! I guess I was most curious about any special requirements prior to WLS with that insurance. I have heard from others that their insurance company required 6 months of physician supervised diet/nutrition plan, etc. I will call them after I get through the informational session. I am fairly certain I will qualify for the medical necessity piece with just my BMI (41), but at this point I do not have any documented comorbities. I guess I will get tons of info when I attend the meeting this coming Monday. I have friends that have gone through the RNY procedure but I do not know anyone personally that has the Lap-Band.

The six month diet is plan specific.  I did not have to do that part.  What employer is your policy thru?  Have you verified that the rider was purchased and that it is a covered benefit?  Some policies exclude it completely.  I know several people that have had the lap band.  Honestly, in my opinion, it takes a lot more will power.  I knew that the procedure was not for me.  I have several friends that have had huge success with it, some with mediocare success and some with no success at all.  Your success is completely up to you.  You are in control of your own destiny.  Ann on this VA board had the lap band but I do not think there are any other regulars that did.  There is a new member that posted last night or this morning that was banded about a year ago I think.  They will be more help to you about the procedure and I will be happy to answer any insurance questions for you.

Welcome to the Va Board!  I wish I could offer information on the group and the insurance, but I am in No. Va.  I wish you luck with it!  :)

Hi Paula!
Actually i work with patients post-op for Norfolk Surgical Group. You have chose a wonderful group ofpeople.  The only reason I did not chose that group is because I'm very private and I do not want to come to my unit after surgery and have my co-workers taking care of me.

GOOD LUCK!

Hi Paula,

Welcome to the VA Board, I am fairly new too and everyone has been so helpful and supportive.  I am in NoVA, so no advice on the center, but I do have Anthem BC/BS of Virginia and I have had no problems whatsoever.  My doctor's have had all the contact with my insurance, I haven't had to talk to them at all.  I had wanted to do the LapBand originally but I was denied for that, my BMI was too high, by 1 point, but they wouldn't do the LapBand on people with a BMI over 50.  That said, that is just my plan.  Every employer has different options and such, so everyone will be different.  BUT, I have found Athem BC/BS to be very easy to work with.  That has been the least stressful part of this whole process for me.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!!!

Hey Paula!  I'm the Ann that Tammy referred to.  I had lapband 13 months ago today at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital.  I've had less-than-expected loss but it's always a work in progress know matter which type you get.  I will be happy to attempt to answer your questions as best I can.  Welcome to the best board in the state!!!

Hugs!
Ann
