I WENT TO MY FIRST SUPPORT MEETING!
Last night I went to my first support meeting at Sentara's careplex. Eventhough it was very informative i found it quite boring...I think maybe since this was more like a nutrition class it may have come off as boring. I know i need to learn as much as i can about what to and what not to eat but I really wanted to hear some testimonies about the surgery and how it has helped people....I guess when i hear support group i was thinking more like AA or NA.
Dissapointed
Not all support groups are equal. Different support groups do different things. Was that their usual format or just something they had scheduled that paticular evening. The first group I started attending after my surgery was on Thursdays at St. Mary's in Richmond. I soon discovered that every Thursday was actually a different support group with a different focus and adifferent facilitator although it was all organized by the same group sponsor. The more local groups lead by an actual post-op WLS patient like Jackie does in Fredericksburg and numerous others do sound more like what you are seeking. They exist, but you'll have to do some fishing around. This Board is a good place to start. I'd be surprised if some folks don't reccommend some good groups to check out in the VA Beach area. You have lots of knowledgeable and successful Post-ops in that area. Good luck. A good support group is a really helpful motivator and source of strength.
I am in 100% agreement with Joe on this one. There are many different groups and most of them run differently. For example, the one at St. Mary's (my home group, too) has a different type of meeting every Thursday of the month and a seperate one once a month just for lap banders. One is nutrition and we actually do have testiomials in this group and a lot of samples, too. It is wonderful. Keep looking or consider traveling once a month for a meeting, They can be a wonderful resource!
