Eating out?
I am not a bander but I do eat out quite a bit. We are so active in the evenings that sometimes it is impossible to cook once we get home. When eating out I try to order fish and have it broiled or baked (just not in high fat butter) or sometype of seafood. Steamed shrimp, crab legs and lobster are favorites of mine. I also get salads a lot. I am very picky b/c I don't do well with chicken or pork but usually do great with steak. I never order hamburgers from out b/c they always overcook them and they are too dry. I can order my steak rare, so that's usually it.
Basically, order high protein and low fat foods and you should be just fine! I also try to go online before I go if it is a new place and check out the menu. You can also ask to have your favorite foods prepared differently and most larger resturants will accommodate you whenever possible.

Straight out of surgery, I'd go with soups at dinner. Just look up the types of soups that are smart. Bisques can be high in sugar. Cream based soups can be high in fat. Look at something broth based with lean meats. Or high in legumes or other beans. They are high in protein and slide down nicely. When you get far enough out, add a small side salad and you have a meal!!
Eating out can work just fine as long as you are prepared for it. When you are transitioning into different food stages, until you know what your pouch is going to like you may want to stay at home to try new foods. Soups, chili, eggs, or meats/fish (not overcooked) are great choices. Steamed veggies, sweet potatoes, etc.
Another thing that can help you is to go online to the restaurant that you are planning to go too and look at their menus of what they serve and at the nutritional informatio. Then plan your meal accordingly so when you go there you don't have to even look at the menu therefore won't be tempted to try and eat something you have not prepared for. You will be amazed at some of the calories of soups etc - as Blair stated - so sometimes what looks like a good choice may not be.........
