It is not ignorance...and a lot of northerners do it now, too!  It is when you put the tea bags in a canister or some sort of glass or plastic (see thru) container and put it in the sun to make the tea instead of on the stove, thru a coffee pot or a tea maker.  It is awesome and really changes the taste, but not good if you are in  hurry to drink it.  It takes hours!  Give it a try sometime, or we can make some at our cookout and you can try it there.

Great advise Tammy.

I always take my iron supplement last thing at bed time with Vit C and after no food for over an hour or so - that way I think it gets all night of uninterrupted absorbtion. No drinking or eating of anything that can cause the iron to not be absorbed. I learned that when I was anemic after my plastic surgeries in February......

However the latest ASMBS guidelines  for 2008 say that after a study of two years most patients (63%) who need iron will  have low iron issues and will turn anemic and that their multivitamin will NOT have sufficient iron for them.... so they need to supplement.

I quote from... http://download.journals.elsevierhealth.com/pdfs/journals/15 50-7289/PIIS1550728908001639.pdf  Page 14

In 1 series, 63% of subjects followed up for 2 years after RYGB developed nutritional deficiencies, including iron, vitamin B.

Two thirds (67%) of those who did develop iron deficiency later became anemic. Their findings suggest that the amount of iron in a standard multivitamin alone is not adequate to prevent deficiency.

It certainly makes interesting reading...... I have always supplemented and not relied on my multivitamin to have enough iron - and I still did not supplement enough!

Jackie,

Some folks are that way.  I have even heard that if you have gone thru menopause completely or had a hysteromecty that you do not ever need iron supplements.  I personally do not agree with that as I have not seen any long term studies on that.
My iron levels have always been pretty good (knock on wood) and I do not take the vit c with it, although I do understand the values of doing it.  I eat a lot of liver (I know,,,eewww to most people) and that is very high in iron.  My level sits at about 15 in all of my blood work and when I donate blood, too.
My advise is always to follow your surgeons recommondations and if you think something is wrong then discuss that with them.
It is very interesting reading.  Funny thing was when I was told this info from the trainers here at work I could not find anything on the internet confirming it.  That's why I asked at my surgeons office and had it confirmed.  I have posted this before but there are a lot of newbies and I really wanted everyone to know.  It is important for us to have the knowledge.  What we chose to do with it after that is totally up to each indivudal.
Hope you are having a blast on vacation.  I am super happy that you got to go.  I know you really needed it and that everyone is glad that you are there.

Love,
Tammy

I am not sure I agree with that about menopause either because may people get anemic whether we lose blood every month or not..... even men get anemic - I think I will always have to take it as I have always been slightly anemic...

I agree knowledge is power...... and we are always learning and need to make sure we pass this knowledge on to others. Thanks for doing this Tammy as it is so important.

I am having a great time away from it all - it is so nice to be able to relax - I am working a few hours for work but not too much - usually while everyone else is in bed  - like right now lololol! I would have missed out on Go Karting and mini golf etc if I had been foced to stay at home and work strike assignments.... so glad thay all settled!

Jackie.

I was told if you drink tea and take iron to wait 1 hr before drinking tea by the doctor to let the iron absorb in the body also dont take your iron and calcuim together casue the iron blocks the calcuim
