This Week's Fitness Tip
I know it has been a litte while that I've posted a fitness tip - time has really gotten away from me lately. But...here's one to get everyone ramped up and restarted.....
Treadmill Intensity. Did you know that holding the side rails on a treadmill reduces the intensity of your workout? This means that you will not burn as many calories as the treadmill’s display shows. And holding on to the front rail, letting the treadmill pull you is even worse (not just for the calorie burn, but also for the body – it puts your body in a bad position which can cause injury). That just stinks! I mean, if you have to work out, why not get the most benefit as you can….right?!?!?! So, the next time you hop on the treadmill, hold onto the rails lightly (with your finger tips) for balance until you get used to the speed and/or incline, and then work on letting your arms swing naturally. Not only will you get a better cardio workout, but you will also be utilizing your core to stabilize yourself, and hey…we all want great abs, right?!?!?!?1 _____________________________________________________________________ Talk with your doctor before beginning any exercise program. Do not exercise if you have any physical problems that might influence your ability to become more active. Stop exercising and call your doctor if you feel dizzy, nauseated, short of breath, or if you feel pain in your chest. If you are more than 40 pounds overweight, you should not work out at a high intensity level without professional supervision. The above information is my personal opinions and is based on my own personal research in this area. © 2008, Jill Krekel, Certified Personal Trainer. All rights reserved

So I run like a Girl....now keep up!
Thank you and you are so right and I have learned that in the last couple of days. I like doing the treadmill and I can do 30 mintues at 2.5 and a incline of .05 at times. I brought the heart rate watch and used it the first time yesterday and now I can keep up with my heart rate and got it up to 125 with being on the treadmill and resting is like 56 so not bad for a old lady. It must be working for me as I can get into large stretch pants a a large top. Got on the scales and weighed 223.5 this morning.
Hey Jill,
GOOD to see you posting! I like these tips. Personally I DONT like the treadmill. I NEED my nature time, change of scenery and such. However, when I WAS getting on one I have to say I found it annoying to hold the railings. Good for me then since it was a deterent instead of a help.
