If I really start to work out and bulk up, will it prevent saggy skin?

This in my newest brainstorm! I had lap-band March 07 and have lost 65 pounds and am really starting to get saggy baggy skin on the upper arms and legs, as well as the apron. I am almost 56 years old. Is it possible to tighten up the saggy skin by bulking up my muscles to make up for the lost fat? Has anyone done this? Sporty Jill? Without having to resort to plastic surgery? I am already doing Zumba twice a week as well as a Muscle Pump class and 2 Yoga classes. Thanks in advance for any and all replies! Diana

Thank you both for your replies! Time to start doing some really serious reps with weights in addition to what I'm already doing. Diana

Diana,  There are some people that can transform their bodies after weightloss surgery with out plastics.  However, there are several factors that prevent us from doing that .  1. Skin changes  After loosing weight our skin gets thinner , and looses it elasticty . Most of us have Yo Yo dieted and this effects the skin greatly .  2. Amount of weightloss . 65 pounds is a lot of weight to have lost , and if you start replacing that with muscle , you will need to really bulk out to fill in the skin . I think the look you would want is firm, this would take a lot of muscle to fill in that skin .  3. Age , as we get older our skin changes . Again , elasticy and it's ability to hold shape .  There is no reason why you cannot tone your body . However, you need to expect that the results will not give you what plastic surgery can .  Keep up the classes though , these are good for your weightloss program and will help to tone .   I now am working on my thighs . I have been put on hold as far as streneous work outs due to a hernia , but I have clearance to swim . I am doing deep water treading , with the hopes to build more muscle . Once this is complete , I will go in to complete the last stage of my plastics .  Best wihes to you ,  Natalie

diana, best of luck to you on reaching this next goal. i lost my weight so fast there was no way i could keep up with the saggy skin. so i am going the plastics route. some people are lucky and don't get a lot of sagging. i hope you are one of them. take care.

Diane - how I wish!! In all honesty - when you are very young or have not carried excess weight for long your skin has a memory and may go back - however - in my case - I was overweight all my life so it did not have a memory that was worth remembering and I opted for the surgery. It is very very unlikely that as we get to our 50's the skin will diminish to the extent you are looking for. I would like to tell you differently but I would also not want to give you false hope...... However toning and getting fit will pay off in many other areas and is a good thing to do ... Jackie
