Granola

From the Fage thread I saw that people are eating Bear Naked granola and Kashi Go Lean as yogurt toppings.  I just don't get it?!?!  I have looked at every bag/box of granola and cereal I come across and find that the sugar is high and/or sugar (or a form of sugar) is in the first three ingrediants (my surgeon's office no-no).  So did you just try something and in the small amounts you are eating not having a problem, or are you really finding products that are low in sugar with sugar not in the first three ingrediants?  Can everyone check their cabinets for me and see if they have a product I can try, give the nutrional info, ingrediant list (first three or four is good) and where you bought it.  I appreciate your help!

I'd be interested if you find one too.  Except for cream of wheat or oatmeal,  Any kind of cereal/granola aded with milk or yogurt causes me to dump.

If I eat granola, I usually add 1 or 2 tablespoons - no more.  Usually it's the Bear Naked High Protein granola, Grape Nuts Trail Mix cereal, All Bran Buds or my new fav....Kay's Naturals High Protein Cheerios type cereal.  Los in sugar HIGH in protein! But, for me....1 or 2 tablespoons.

Hey, Lauren:  I haven't had any problems at all with what I add, but I keep the portions small (a few tablespoons) and I make sure the sugar content is very low .  Here are some stats: Kashi Go Lean Ingredients:  Soy grits, Kashi Seven Whole Grains & Sesame (hard red winter wheat, long grain brown rice, whole grain oats, barley, triticale, rye, buckwheat, sesame seeds), evaporated cane juice syrup, cornmeal, corn flour, soy protein, wheat bran, oat fiber, corn bran, honey, evaporated cane juice, natural flavors, calcium carbonate, salt, annatto.  For a 1 cup serving:  140 cals, 1g fat, 30g carbs (10g dietary), 6g sugar, 13g protein. Bear Naked All Natural Granola (Blueberry Walnut) Peak Protein Ingredients:  Whole grain oats, honey, soy flakes, expeller pressed canola oil, natural flavors, soy protein isolate, whole grain crisp rice (rice, barley malt), sweetened dried blueberries (blueberries, sugar, glycerin, sunflower oil), walnuts, ground flax seed.  For a 1/4 cup serving:  130 cals, 6g fat, 15g carbs (2g dietary fiber), 5g sugar and 5g protein. Bare Naked also has a "fit" formula that is a little lower in cals, fat, sugar and protein. I hope this helps.  The big thing is to make sure that what you are doing is what your surgeon/nut wants you to do.  I have found that reading the labels is CRUCIAL.  I discovered a huge organic/whole foods section in Ukrops today (in Fredericksburg, but I know they are based out of Richmond) and they have all sorts of things that look like they might be good to try.  You might go by there if there is one near you.  :)

Lauren ~ My label reads.....fruit & nut granola (bear naked brand) 1/4 cup serving 7 fat 18 carbs 3 fiber 5 sugar 3 protein Ingredients:  whole grain oats, honey, canola oil, almonds, cranberries, coconut, walnuts, pecans, maple syrup, oat bran, ground flax seed, toasted sesame seeds. I had a hand full and it is yummy, not real sweet but just sweet enough.  I will pick the cranberries and the bigger nuts out of mine since I am still a newbie.  I actually plan to put it in my mini chopper and get in real fine before adding it to my fage in the morning. Good Luck....Susan  :)

Lauren ,  Power Crunch has come out with a cereal . It is a protein cereal . OMG it is heaven .  Comes in Almond Honey and Apple Spice. It has only 6 grams of sugar and 10 grams of whey protein . While it is not granola , ( which to me is way to heavy in the sugar and carb area )  It will work in the yogurt as a crunch sensation for you , while tasting good .  PM me if you want to know how to get it .  Thanks,  Nat

Good am Lauren, I personally don't eat cereal or granola. On the rare occasion I have eaten cereal its been rice krispies and it was a mistake. I guess its trial and error for some but I don't find it of sound value for me personally. I will eat oatmeal but otherwise that its for the hot/cold cereal/granola type concoctions. Most things are just too "heavy" feeling for me otherwise. You've gotten some great answers from others. What ever you try I hope it works well. Hugs to you ...

hey lauren, the only thing i have used in my yogurt was grape nuts...big mistake. they blew up in my tummy. so i jus go with the smooth texture of yogurt. no crunch for me. like most said, trial and error. but i hate the error side so i try to stay away from things that scare me. yes i am still affraid of trying new foods. cuz usually i have a bad reaction to them. take care hun.

Lauren, I eat oatmeal for breakfast almost every weekday while at work.  I use the Quaker Quick Oats and mix with skim milk instead of water.  I make it really soupy then add some grape nuts or granola to it for the crunch.  I also add a packet of sweet and low and a half a scoop of any whey protein powder.  Sometimes if I really want a change then I add some cinnamon or a small part of a banana.  I do not have the packages in front of me but I do not add enough to worry too much about the sugar content.  It is not a full serving and I have never dumped from it.  Let me know what you find!  I get about 25 grams of protein from this.
