I was proud of myself today...

I actually felt great today!!  Pain still but I have energy.  Usually, I have no energy and just want to lay around and do nothing.  But as mentioned in eailer post, I went to a service/picinic with my church at the park and then went to Target with the family so my youngest daughter could blow through her birthday money.  I WANTED to do this.  not forced and got off my feet kicking and screaming.  I LOVE it.   I do have a question, as I am still on full liquids I brought my food in my small cooler.  However, I was surveying the food to see what type of choices I would make if I could eat.  They had a lot of pasta stuff, so I would stay away from that and just go for some fruit.  However, the meat is my question.  They did hamburgers and hotdogs and got chicken from KFC.  So here are my questions. The KFC Chicken is of course fried.  Not a good choice.  However, if I had a breast and took of the skin, would it be safe to eat the meat?  Or because it was friend in the oil it is still a poor choice. I know some people can not eat red meats.  Is this true?  Or cold I have had like half a hamburger?  Just the meat? Are hotdogs safe to eat?  WWYD?

Hi Melissa- I left you a message yesterday so I did call you as promised! As to your question - I can eat almost any kind of meat as long as it is not too dry.  I eat chicken, steak, pork etc..... Kentucky fried chicken - I would not even dream of trying that - I would be scared that the excess fat it is cooked in would get me.  Even taking the skin off it is still not a good choice I do not eat hamburgers - I sometimes eat a turkey burger or a veggie burger, but always check the fat content - and maybe if you make them yourself you know what went in them Some people do not eat hot dogs but I eat the turkey reduced fat ones - they taste good to me but I only eat them occasionally... Just what I do - others may have a different view..... Jackie

Yes, i did get your phone message.  We were still in the recital.  i was going to call you today, but didn't get a chance.  I will give you a call tomorrow.  Thank you for calling!  So, if I am faced with a cook out like that, what should I do?  Prepare my own meal, like tunafish and bring it with me?  I am using every chance I can as a learning experience.  I thought this was a great oppurtunity with the different foods prepared at the picnic to see what I would do.

At the very early stages I used to attempt to see if I could find out what people are eating and then decide whether to assume I could get something to eat or bring my own.......  at the start i used to take my own or bring something with me in a cooler and left it in the car and see if there was anything I could eat . If not ,I just took it out of my cooler and feigned allergies for those who did not know I had surgery... It is trial and error in the beginning - but kudos to you for starting to plan it out for future events...... Jackie

Good am Melissa, Glad you are feeling better. The energy levels will come and go but get better as you build it up over time. Staying busy is what really works for me as well. Being jam packed and on the go really helps me get moving and staying that way helps me stay active and having the buggas to chase around is lots of fun. Makes me SO happy I can do it! Pasta for ME is NOT a good choice. It has never settled well and not the best option really. At times I can handle it but its not worth it to me with all the other choices made available to me. I do not eat hot dogs. Its a texture thing and I won't get into the details but its not a good thing lol. As for hamburgers I WILL eat them if they are 97/3 lean or turkey burgers and at times Morning Star meat etc. I will not eat at KFC. There is nothing there worth it to me that would carry any beneficial nutritional value. Some folks cannot tolerate red meats and others can in small doses. I can handle chicken moist and sometimes a burger however I cannot do steak. I think you'll find that its trial and error but you'll find what works with you and you'll be surprised that you will be making choices that are healthier and it tends to rub off on others. Hope you're doing well this Monday! All best!

i assume that your question relates to future activity; not a question about moving directly from your liquid phase to full meats. That would be a very bad idea. You will want to follow the progression laid out by your Doc. I am 11.5 months out and I tolerate almost any kind of meat cooked at home or in a real restaurant. Not fried, however. I often eat red meat (very lean ground beef, steak, roast beef) but often have to add some additional moisture (generally balsamic vinaigrette). Also grilled or baked chicken breasts (always with added moisture). Also thinly sliced turkey in salads. I have not been able to stomach turkey burgers or turkey chili - that stuff is wrong, just wrong. Best wishes, Joe

Oh, this is for future events.  I am taking situations I am in and seeing what would be the smart choices.  I brought my small cooler with a yogurt, sf jello, & sf pudding.  Gave me some choices there. : )  I would not go against my surgeons plan.  I know where my pouchy is and I feel her.  she would KILL me if I did that to her and I can not imagine eating regular food yet.  Thank you!

It really will be a trial & error thing for you to find what will work for your body.  I don't have any problems with meat of any kind.  If at a cook out I will go for a hamburger or hot dog.  Yes I realize they are not the best choices for me but I am not eating them for every meal, every day so I have them occasionally.  I try to make sure that the sides I have with them are good choices.

I would not eat KFC or any of the fast food  chicken. The fat it is cooked in would send me over the edge. I can eat 1/2 a hamburger, steak, pork, chicken (roasted works best for me) all with added moisture--a little gravy, sf ketchup, ff dressing. I have not had a hot dog yet. The key is chew, chew chew!

You have gotten some really great answers here .  I for one , would just take my own food anyway just in case there is no other choices for you .  For me .. the answers would be ..  KFC-NO WAY  - ( Fast Food Cooked in Grease - Not ever going back there again ) BEEF - NO WAY  ( My pouch cannot handle it ) HOT DOGS - NO WAY .. ( The skins get stuck over my stoma ) Some have no isses .. but I do .  You could eat the hamberger. I would be careful though that it is not dried out . This sometimes causes problems as well .  In time you will learn what foods you can and cannot eat . Until then - always be prepared to have your own available .  Nat
