It's Not a Plauteau .... Ya Think ?

I wanted to post this today, as there are so many of you that are newly post op, or getting your date soon.  There is a period of time after your surgery, where your body is going to slow down. The weight loss will either stop - or slow. There will be panic, worry that you will never lose again. Well take it from me, this is not a Plateau.  Plateaus normally come around month 4 to 6 and last for about 6 weeks. After your surgery, your body is basically thrown into starvation mode. It begins to search for places to get nutrients from. It also has been stressed by anesthesia and surgery. It begins to say “What the heck are you doing to me?" Your body's reaction is to hold on to everything it has. Thus stopping the weight loss. What you need to remember that this is temporary, and you can jump start it.  You will need to up your protein intake. If you are only getting in 60 grams, shoot for 80. You will then need to look at your exercise. If you are walking 2 miles, add a mile. Water, if you are doing 80 ounces - up it to 120. Trust me when I say, your stall will cease and you will be back on your way to loosing.  Keep in mind too that we are all different in our journeys. For example :  After RNY surgery research states most people can/will lose 50-78% of their excess bodyweightt...let’s say both of these "hypothetical" people lose 75% of their excess bodyweight....

1.A 400lb person at 5'6'' (a bmi of 64) who has 250# of excess wt (ideal is 150#) will lose 187.5# and weigh 212.5# and have a BMI of 34.5, 1 1/2-2 years after surgery.

2.A 300# person of 5'6'' (a bmi of 48) who has 150# of excess bodyweight. (ideal also 150#) will lose 112.5# and weigh 187.5# and have a bmi of 30,  1 1/2-2 years after surgery.

This is an example just to show that you cannot compare your weight. loss to anyone else’s!  Listen to your doctor; mine said a 2-7# loss a week. Some weeks I lost 5 others none!

Keep in mind that we are all individuals and that each of us has different goals.  If you get a stall, no panic or worry, it is temporary. You will restart again.  Best wishes to you all, I hope this has been helpful!  Tink

Hey Tink. I just re read this post and can not say thank you enough. I myself, was thinking that I had hit one of the plateaus. Having only lost 1 lb in about 2 weeks, I was so depressed. But then I started logging my food and beverages into thedailyplate.com and realized that on most days, I was only consuming about 400-600 calories, (and according to Jeanine, I should be getting in about 1000) and on the days I go do the gym, I am burning between 600-800, to start. So I did what the post said. I upped what I was eating a bit, to give me more calories and I upped my protein and WOW! Since last Tuesday, I am down almost 6lbs. Thank you so much for all your advice. Even if I don't say it enough, I truly respect your opinions and what you post. It is an inspiration.
