upcoming surgery
I finally got my surgery date (7/15). now I'm no longer excited, I'm terrified. I keep hearing stories from people who have had the surgery and there bouts with vomitting. I hate to throw up, and I mean hate it. I'm almost in a state of panic over the thought of this surgery (RNY) going to cause me to throw up all the time as I'm finding out what I can eat or not eat and how much. Could any of you please help.
Good am,
CONGRATS on your surgery date! Vomiting can happen for various reasons. If you eat things that don't agree with your new stomach then this very well might cause vomiting. Also, if you eat too much at one time again a reason you may vomit. Its trial and error finding out what you can and cannot eat. Being terrified is normal and we all face those fears. Follow the rules and remember that each person is different. For example in my case I did a LOT of vomiting when I had my 2 strictures and both were just over a year post op. Before then my vomiting was due to anesthesia related issues which continues today with ANY procedures I have involving it. The "what if's" will get you down. But, turn those into determination. You CAN do this and will get through things.
All best!

Well I will try to help. I have never thrown up for eating the wrong thing since surgery - because I try hard not to eat what I should not. It is not normal to throw up all the time. If you watch everything you are supposed to eat and stick with your surgeon's plan you may not have any issues. Some do and some do not. BUT it is not the same to throw up any more like it was before surgery because you will not have the stomach acid - so what goes down is what comes up. I have thrown up due to being ill and although the nauseua was the same, the actual thowing up not as bad.....
Not everyone throws up all the time......... please don't let that make you worry so much.......

I'm only 8 weeks out of surgery. I have not vomitted at all. I have never even felt like throwing up. I try very hard to stick to the drs. rules. A couple of times I have felt a tummy ache. I think I ate something too greasy or fatty or too much. But it was really not too bad.
Again, I still have a long road to go. But at this point, no vomitting for me.
Best wishes, Penny

Congrats on your surgery date - how exciting!
You're going to do so well. You'll quickly find out what your pouch can tolerate. If you follow the dietary guidelines your doctor/surgical team give you, vomiting will be minimal if at all. I was terrified of dumping, so I followed the directions to the letter. I'm sure you will do well.
Even though you hate vomiting, this will all be worth it in the end. You'll feel better, you'll be healthier and you'll look great!
Keep your chin up!

Congrats on the date. I am less than 3 weeks out but have not vomited yet. My dr was actually really concerned because I vomitted for 9 months of pregnancy(lost 50 lbs while pregnet) I am just following exactly what they tell me to do and I am fine. So dont worry to much.
