Congrats on your date & time Jim!!!!  I will give my best shot at your supplements too.  Definitely talk with your surgeon to see what exactly you will need to take as I am sure the requirements for a man will be a bit different than they are for us ladies.  I get most of mine at Vit. Shoppe, walmart, & cvs.  As for protein, pretty much the same, once I found one I liked I searched online for cheaper prices although it was available in bulk on line for cheaper.  I was in the hospital from Wednesday til Friday evening, but no issues here.  You will need to know if you are going to be on liquids or soft/pureed foods after surgery cause that will make a difference in what you can eat.  We are here for you so ask away as needed.

Thanks for the info Ms Court and if I can think of more things to ask I will. I'm hoping they will inform me as to what I can eat as so far no info has been transfered to me---maybe they give it at the hosp. I dunno.. Thanks for being here and I will I promise...Jim

Great news!  your surgery is only days away now! I get my vitamins at Walmart, and protein from Vitamin Shoppe or online sources.  There are alot of bariatric or supplement companies out there.   I think the previous suggestion of trying different things and then looking for the lowest prices online is good.  Just be aware of high shipping and handling charges.  Figure that into your cost.  :) As far as your diet post surgery, this is very important and you definately should get that as part of your surgery cost.  I'm not sure if you meant that the addition $2000 would have been to get continued care or something.  Geez.  My doctors office did a two week post op full liquid diet, followed by two weeks of pureed foods, followed by three progressions into solid foods, starting with soft solids.  It was a long process.  I took approx two months to be where I was eating anything I would want that agreed with me.  Every sugeon's office is different.  I see others on the board who progress much faster or, do not have any post op liquid diet as the progression. Best of luck!

Hi Jim. Glad you finally have a date & time for your surgery. It will be here before you know it. As far as vitamins, I just pick mine up at the local Walmart. My surgeons office said that as long as it's a complete vitamin, they don't have a specific store that they prefer. I don't, however, take a pill for my B-12. I do a shot, once a month for that. And for my protein. Since I am almost a month out, I am able to get some of it from food and milk, which certainly helps alot but I do still take 1 protein shake a day. For that I use Carnation Instant Breakfast. When 1 packet is mixed with 1 3/4 cup of skim milk, you get about 19 grams of protein. Some may think that that is alot of milk and will make a big shake but it makes it not so sweet and I sip and refrigerate, sip & refrigerate. So it really isn't all that bad. You can also add Carnation powder milk to it to get a bunch more protein.

I hope this helps. I am sure it is all a bit overwhelming. Good luck and we are here for you!!

Hey Hubbie

I have been dealing with alot of my own issues this past month, and I know it must feel as if I have abandoned you lately, but you have been on my mind.....and I have you scheduled for a visit Friday at about 7:30-8pm.......gives you enough time to get out of the anesthesiologists grip, and be half-way human when I visit......  Good to know you have your initial supplements going, but you need something long term......

I am surprised your insurance wont cover the nutritionist.  That is a different ball of wax all together though I suppose.......You would need to find one that specializes in WLS......I told you I can take you to the Vitamin Shoppee  and show you what you need (I think the only difference between men and women is Iron, and if I am wrong, someone say something now :))

The hospital wont give you a list (I dont think) that should come from the surgeon, or at least mine did.  He gave me a binder full of information to go by, and I can bring that to you if you would like.....same surgery, different surgeons but if your surgeon is not willing to help you anymore than he is without $$$$ then obviously he dosent care about your after plan........

As for hospital stay, plan for the weekend, unless you have complications.  You are having it Lap (Which I am VERY surprised with the lap you do not have a pre-op diet) so that should mean a shorter hospital stay......

Again, I will be there Friday, of course, and will post for you if you would like.......

See you tomorrow.....I have LOTS to tell you!!!

Hey Jim, Just wanted to wish you good luck! I'll try to come up with Dianna on Friday night. When I was first going through all the preop stuff for the surgery, she took me to get my vitamins as well. Went right to the Vitamin Shoppe. At the beginning, you need chewable vitamins, calcium, etc and the stuff  you bought is probably new-post-op friendly. Once that is gone, you'll be a little farther out and able to tolerate pills, and at that point you can be a little more cost effective. Not only that, but the Vitamin Shoppe tends to have vitamins in higher dosages. Like Vitamin D -- which no one told me about until I was about 6 months post-op, and deficient. That's another vitamin you might want to consider adding. Let me know if I can help in any way! Julie
