Meds after surgery ??
Okay, so I'm on a few psych meds. It's genetic in my family so I'll probably need to take them for the rest of my life. Does anyone know if you can still take them after surgery what with the malabsorption and whatnot? How does that work? Sorry to be a troublesome newb and ask questions right off the bat, but this is the one that seems to be bugging at me the most. I take cymbalta, klonopin and trazadone if that helps. TIA!
Jamie
Jamie - i'm sorry i can't help you with your questions, but, you may also want to post on the "general board" or your surgery specific board as well, since there are more people looking there. I hope you find your answer soon. Also, could you call and ask your dr? You sound like you are doing fabulous! Lys
Good pm,
Prefacing this with saying PLEASE take this up with your PCP/WLS surgeon. I can tell you that yes you will be able to continue your meds. In what capacity needs to be taken up with your PCP/WLS surgeon and go from there. There are MANY folks that take meds following WLS such as those you've listed. I can say the dosages will almost certainly be tweaked (in most of the cases I know) and its all workable.
All best!

Hi and welcome Jamie and I can answer the Trazdone I take those everyday 3 times a day and I did do the cymbalta but was taken off do to my asking. The other one not sure about. But the Dr's or your surgeons will give you advice as well just give them your med list and they will also work w/ your other Dr's to get you the right dosages. Once again Welcome to the VA Board.

I was advised by my surgeons office to continue with my psych meds and work with him on dosages and such post sugery. My initial question to my psych doc was would I have to take more because of the malabsoption piece, but surprisingly he told me no, that his bypass patients saw no change in effectiveness of the drugs post surgery. We have even been able to lower my dosages once I started seeing alot of the weight come off! So work with both your surgeon's office and your psych office on this one, they should both be up with the proper way to work your current medicines into your new program. :)
