Memorial Day Food Prep ...

Ok , it is here , the weekend. Many of us will be heading out to parties and cook outs. I wanted to take a minute and tell you that you do not have to feel left out . Especially if you are newly pre-op or at the stage where you just are not eating as others eat .  Here is how I spent my first Memorial Day as a pre-op .  Hambergers on the grill - I ate only the Hamberger ( NO Bun ) - took my own SF Ketchup with me  Chips - I brought Carrot sticks  Hot-Dog- I do not eat them - they clog my stoma - If I could eat them , they would be turkey dogs.  Deviled Eggs - I ate only the center of the egg. I chose the protein over the egg whilte . And only ate one .  Just make sure you keep to your lifestyle plan ( I hate the word diet )  Arm yourself with foods you can eat  .  Stay hydrated - this is a must - especially if you are outside and the weather is hot .

Holidays are centered mostly around food , but you can make it your own. Just prepare.

Enoy - Be safe !

Good post, I'd like to add: Burgers...premade turkey burgers are AWESOME!  I keep those, salmon burgers and Boca burgers as staples in my house.  I'll cook up some turkey bacon and melt reduced fat cheddar cheese on top and my guys are in heaven! For hot dogs, I very rarely fix them because of the nitrates and sodium associated with them, but, if I do we usually eat the Hebrew National as they have alot less chemicals in them.  You can get them lower in fat.  I always carry a veggie and a cheese tray for all get togethers.  And if you absolutely feel like you must have a dessert, I make a practlcally sugar free triffle to take along: 1/2 Sugar Free Angel Food Cake (Walmart, Farm Fresh) 2 Boxes Sugar Free Jello Pudding, Instant, made wih FF skim milk.  I like the lemon and the french vanilla 1 1/2 cup - 2 cups fresh fruit (blueberries, strawberries) 1 1/2 container sugar free cool whip I use a pretty clear glass bowl from Walmart. Take 1/2 of angel food cake (1/2 of the 1/2).  Break up into pieces and put as the bottom layer.  Spoon 1/2 of the pudding on top, add 1/2 of the fruit on top, and then 1/2 of the whipped cream.  Make sure that you spread everything evenly.  Then add the remaining cake, remaining pudding, remaining fruit, remaining whipped cream. Set in fridge for 1 hour or longer to chill. This dessert will serve a lot of people, so if I am making it only for the family, I half the recipe above and make it in sundae glasses and for me it makes the pefect serving size. I made this dessert when I was 7 months out, and I do NOT keep it in the house - haha.

Jill and Tink, I found this recipe and thought I would try this for our church party tomorrow. Do you think it is "safe" for me to eat?  Creamy Lemon Pies 3 cups cold skim milk 1 large pack sugar free, fat free instant vanilla pudding 3TBS sugar free lemonade mix 12 oz fat free whipped topping thawed 2 reduced calorie graham cracker crust Mix together first 4 ingredients and pour into pie crust. Refrigerate.

My personal opion, and only my opinion......

While it appears to be somehting that could be safe, because of the lack of sugar, it certainly may cause you some problems because of texture and tartness. You aren't very far out, so my personal opinion would be to either have 1 or 2 bites off of someone elses plate (if you absolutely must have some) or leave it alone all together (if you can). But, the recipe sounds great - thanks for sharing.....

I make this dessert with a couple of differences but I can testify it is delicious! Maybe we could persuade Jill to make it for the Meet and Greet BBQ/Health Seminar on June 28th! All in favor say YES!!! lololol!  I eat hebrew National Hot dogs too where I have to have a hoy dog! And I eat turkey and veg burgers. I wish I hadn't got into this thread because now I am hungry lolol!! Jackie

Thank you for the great food and recipes ideas. Today I went to a picnic and brought an ice cream cake. Use low fat ice cream...pressed into a 13x9 pan. Add sliced fruit. Freeze overnight. Spread low-fat cool whip. Decorate with sliced fruit. I used blueberries and strawberries...to make an American flag. Thank you to all of our servicemen and servicewomen.
