The lady at Cobra was clueless I tell you .. she said Oh .. just take that letter we sent you and tell them you have applied ... I am so confused .. I am having to file for long term disablity .. dealing with that .. now the Cobra crap ..
ANYONE .. HELP !!!!

Who is more confused now than ever !
Hey Nat,
I'm confused. If you are filing long-term disability, then your employment status is not terminated. While still an employee, your insurance should remain in affect, and you would only need cobra if you quit/got terminated. I'm no expert, but that is my take. Cobra is something you are entitled to purchase for up to 18 months usually after separation from your employer.

My employer has it written that once you go on short term disablity as I am now , they terminate your benefits and you go on cobra... yes it is messed up , but they can do it .. according to me HR department . SO in January I will be eligble for long term disablity - and they will re-enstate me at that time . But until then I have to buy Cobra .
I am still confused .
Hey Nat -- I can help you here as I used to be "in a previous life" a benefits administrator. Your employer has 60 days from the date of your "separation from employment" to supply you with a Cobra letter specifying your coverage options. You then have 60 days from receipt of the letter or end date of benefits (whichever is later) to elect and pay for the first month of Cobra. The premium is usually 102% of whatever your employer is paying for the coverage. Cobra is good for up to 18 months, on a month to month basis. Once you elect and pay for it, it is retroactive to the date that your previous employee's coverage expired. You can usually use your existing medical card to claim benefits, although that is not always so. As long as you elected Cobra within the timeframe and supplied payment, you should not have a problem. Hope this helps somewhat.
Hugs,
Nannette
