Don't Want to Eat...

Does anyone else just not care if they eat or not? I am almost 6 weeks postop and have lost about 40 pounds. I drink a lot..but have gotten to where I don't care if I eat or not and some days find that I have not eaten enough to keep a bird alive. I did really enjoy my Thanksgiving lunch which only consisted of about 2 bites each of turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and lima beans. I ate off of my 2 year olds plate and did not even finish his leftovers. Anyone else have this problem. And how did you overcome this....I can't make myself eat..it makes me feel sick. Not sick like there is something medically wrong...but sick like I just don't want food.

Hi there- I hear ya. When I was that far out the thought of another pureed whatever just didn't sound as appealing as not eating anything. BUT, here's the catch....your body may go into starvation mode and that would hinder your weight loss. SO...be sure you're getting in your protein and vitamins. Start to do some exercise (walking, gentle stuff). You may find that you want to eat a bit more. Also, try finding something you do enjoy eating...For me it was peanut butter or refried beans. I think I lived on those and cheese for the better part of a month. Schedule your eating and stick to it the best you can....you need to nourish your body. I'm sure you'll get lots of advice....this is just my 2 cents. Christina S

It is called putting the fire out . When you had the surgery , there is a nerve that is cut I belive it is called the Vargus nerve or Vegus nerve , anyway it is the nerve that tells your brain that you are hungry . My surgeon said this is what makes the surgery even more a sucess. I am 2.5 years out and still never hungry . I have to make myself eat as I am diabetic and very suceptable to low blood sugars . Make sure you are getting in enough calories, protein and water and you will be fine . I am so thankful for my fire being put out .. LOL .. Best wishes to you and congrats on your weight loss . I was like that in the beginning, but now at 4 months out I feel hungry a lot. It scares me. Especially since I've been stalling a lot. I feel like I may have stretched my stomach back out. I'm probably nuts, but that is how I feel. I'm working through it. I would do what the others have suggested above me. Those supplements and liquids are very important. Amber

Plan your eating, and do it, just as if you were taking medicine. If you do not stick to an eating plan you will get sick. Please stay the course and stay healthy! hugs, Lois

Enjoy it while it lasts !!! Ahhhhhhh..those were the days !! I am 9 months out now and even though I never really feel hunger...The head hunger is back at times. BUT make sure that you are getting in all your fluids and protein and eating a few bites for each meal. And seriously..this is a new sensation for us all at first because we were so use to being hungry all the time. Weight loss surgery adjusts the hunger hormones in the obese and puts them on an even level. The surgery also jolts your gastrointestinal system and you really don't want to eat for a while..at least most don't. One good thing about it is the quick weight loss which you will experience in the first 1-3 months. Hang in there..and if you have concerns contact your surgeon. Congrats on the 40lbs !!! That is awesome !! Dana

Oh how I wish they would have CUT that nerve on me, cuz, I still wanna eat. Infact, I always wanted to eat. I just love food. I mourn food. The taste, texture, etc... And Dana is right, head hunger does set in and thats hard to fight. The body is not screaming for food but your mouth just wants to taste something. That's why it just ticks me off when people say, "your doing the easy way" or " your cheating" because there is nothing simple about it. Listen to the wise words of everyone here and get that food in. You need to be healthy when your "Skinny". Happy Holidays, Susan

Honey, I think we have all been there but it does go away...Not eating is not healthy so remind yourself to eat breakfast lunch and dinner. Welcome to your new world but the need for food does come back sooner than I would have like... However, the not wanting to eat does come back to me often thank goodness. Good luck, Hon, you sound very normal....Huggles, Betsy

Hi, Char You are not alone...enjoy it while you can...I still have days when I just don't feel like eating anything - then other days when I feel like I could eat everything in the kitchen...even though I don't. I have been lucky like Natalie - It is the Vegf Nerve...I have attached a site that has several articles on it....you can also look it up on http://webmd.com - and do a search on Vegf Nerve in Gastric Bypass Surgery. http://www.newsrx.com/newsletters/Obesity-and-Diabetes-Week/2005-01-24.html Keep up with your protein and vitamins...and calcium. Keep up the great work! You are doing an awesome job! My husband Jon - just had his surgery on Nov. 20 - and he is still struggling with head hunger...it's definitely not the easy way out!! Hugs Jill
