Lap Band on 01/29/07 with
hey everyone, i took the first step and attended my first info session with Dr. Moazzez (sp?). Im super excited so i have to call monday and make my appt with him. i was disappointed thought that my insurance considers Lapband to be experimental, and does not cover it. oh well, now i have to look into RNY. Any body with good reasons why RNY is better? ~moni

Moni, Many people do quite well with the lapband. RNY probably yields faster weight loss than lapband for most since it is malabsorptive as well as restrictive. You not only limit your intake of food you also do not absorb all the calories and fats from what you do take in. With RNY, you'll need to watch your protein intake (make sure you get enough) and you'll have to take vitamins for life and get your bloodwork checked usually twice a year. With RNY, you may experience dumping syndrome. This occurs when food**** the intestines too fast. For those that experience it (rumored to be 40% of post-ops), it is usually triggered by sugar or fatty foods. You could get shakey, sweaty, diarrhea, stomach cramps, etc. I am 18 month post-op from a lap RNY. My surgeon was one of Dr. Moazzez's partners who has since moved to WA state so Dr. Moazzez does my aftercare and he has operated on me for a few other things. He is a fine surgeon and excellent doctor. I do dump on incidental sugars (smallish amounts in a product) so I know not to even go near the real thing. I lost 32 lbs prior to surgery and 88 since for a total of 120 lbs. I reached my goal weight at 14 months post-op. My husband is > 2 years post-op from open RNY. His surgeon was another partners of Dr. Moazzez' who has since retired. My husband doesn't dump but avoids sugars until Christmas eve and day. Good man. He reached his goal in 9 months. (Men, sheesh.) Take care, Kathy

Hiyas Monica, I would check into what coverage is for 2007. I have BC/BS fep and they considered it experimental, but it is covered in 2007. Plus if you really want that over anything else you can fight it. But that is a long tiresome battle. Congrats on making a decision to pursue WLS. Anna
