Hi, welcome! I'm not sure about the medicaid system. I didn't know they even approved the surgery. I went to see Dr. Moore & Dr. Spencer in Chesapeake/Suffolk. They are the best. I don't know if that is an option for you, but I definitely had to see my PCP first and they give the referral. Good luck with your search! Amber

Dr. Terracina in Newport News takes Medicaid and does both Lapband and LapRNY. Before you decide on your type of surgery, please do some research. Visit the Lapband board and ask questions. Remember, you will not loose weight as fast as an RNy patient. On average it takes 5 years to get to goal weight on Lapband. You can also have complications just like any other surgery. Port infections, Band Slippage, rejection of the lapband itself. Are you a sugar addict/eater? Go w/RNY Have you been able to follow a diet successfully? Then maybe Lapband, if not RNY Will you be able to go to see your doc for regular fills? Are you willing to wait 3-5 years to get all your weight off? Are you able to be a compliant patient? (This goes for all surgeries) No surgery is a miracle cure. It's a tool and how you use the tool will effect your success. I know some very successful lapbanders and know a great many that are not successful. some people eventually down the line get frustrated and end up converting to the RNY. I may sound like I'm bashing the Lapband, but I'm not. It's good for some people, but not everyone. I was a huge sweettooth. It was my downfall. Lapband would have not cured my sweettooth. With RNY, Iw as scared to eat sugar and high fats. I can eat most anything I want now, but it helped me retrain my mind and now I just don't want it anymore. The hardest Thing with lapband is food choices. Lapband patients know that sugar and fat won't make them sick like RNY patients. It's a huge obstacle for them. It truly is a tool and the failure rate is pretty high. I have some statistics somewhere on my computer, so if you want them I will email them to you. Jane

Hello! I had Dr. Dalton and LOVED him but due to malpractice insurance he is no longer able to do surgery. (i just called his office to double check) She said it could change at any time but as of right now, the ins. company isn't letting him do the surgeries wHich is VERY unfortunate. Good luck & God Bless Erika 247/243 2 yr. anniv 11/3/06 - FRIDAY!!

Hiyas Jorden, Welcome!! My doctors office explained it like this but not sure how it works with medicaid. If you have PPO you do not need a referal, if you have HMO you do. Hope that helps. Anna
