Favorite Protien drink

Ok I know this has been asked before but I am getting somewhat close to my date and just want to hear again what is everyone's favorite protien drink is. I need to start trying them out to find one I like. I have tried the EAS Advant Edge and I have to say it was not great and no so bad I couldn't tolerate it. But I would like to find something that I will enjoy drinking.

Laurie- I've fallen in love with the liquid protein vials. Profect and IDS. They sell them online in various sites or at the Vitamin Shoppe. I also really liked the Unjury Unflavored Powder...also available online. I must warn you though...my tastes for protein have changed. The first 2-3 weeks after surgery I was using the Vitamin Shoppe brand powder. I tried it again this week and could NOT choke down the drink. Oh well...good thing I bought a small container. I love the Profect for it's convience.. especially now because I am 22 months out and still don't always eat right, this adds that boost of protein [25 g's in 2.7 oz] This product saved me from protein meltdown when I was just 3 months out, I was still so struggling with protein, everything gagged me within 3 weeks of taking it, my hair stopped falling out also, it's has lots of good vit's for us in it. I also found the SciTec Protein Delights, I am a big fan of this product, I still just do a protein shake in the morning and when I ran out of the chocolate.. I went through withdrawals. I buy mine at bodybuilding. com, better price than the other sites. I also love the strawberry white chocolate, vanilla very berry & the vanilla pineapple. Good stuff, it all mixes well with water also. However i like my chocolate 1 with warm milk in the morning! good luck! and remember your taste might change after surgery.

Laurie, I no longer use protein supplements; I just wanted to wish you the best on your surgery. We will be almost 1 year apart (mine was 10/5/05). Dr. Lucktong is wonderful you are in great hands!!!

Sorry, for the delay in my response.... My Dr. prefers after 6 months that we get our protein from food because of excess calories consumed with supplements. I am able to get somewhere in the range of 80-100 grams of protein through food. Some Dr.'s say supplements for life, mine doesn't. I tolerate meat and cheese really well so I get lots of protein. So far all my blood work has come back excellent, and I have not had any excess hair loss. I am sure my Dr. has patients that don't tolerate allot of food well that still supplement. Do what works best for you and go with your surgeon's recommendation. K

I agree that you should follow your doctor's advice but I have another question - and please don't think I am judging you - I am just curious... did you have RNY? Because if you did you know that you malabsorb - I am just curious how you can judge how much protein you are getting when you don't know how much you are malabsorbing. I would be too scared to do what you are doing lol! My surgeon is one of those that says you need to be on protein supplements for life...... But if your labs are good etc it is obviously working for you. Jackie

Jackie, I do not think that you are judging. I realize that we all have different regimens. Yes, I had RNY with 125cm bypassed. No, I do not know how much I malabsorb but research I have done stated the Reccomended Daily Allowance (RDA) of protein for a person of my age is approx. 45 grams a day. So even with the malabsortion I am still getting more than the RDA for a person w/o RNY. This is purely my opinion and I may get flamed for it but oh well (I do what works for ME). So many people put an emphasis on getting 120g or more of protein a day and it is not (survival) necessary for our body. I have noticed that protein supplments are a big thing on this board. If you go out to the main board or graduates board I think you will find that after a while most (not all) stop using supplments because as you become further out you can intake more and can get more of your needs directly from food. I personally focus on getting a balanced diet that includes protein (1st) vegetables, fruits and plenty of fiber. Yes, I eat carbs not in excess; research shows that our bodies need good carbs. I also make sure that I take all of my vitamins along with some extra I have chose to add. I am 1 year post-op with perfect labs -140 lbs. and still loosing. K

I agree that you need to do what works for you and if you have perfect labs it is obviously working for you. There are so many different opinions out there between doctors, nutritionists and surgeons that sometimes it is hard to know just who is right.... I hope no-one flames you because even the doctors can't agree among themselves so who is to say one is right and one is wrong. We don't really have many people with 30 years of this surgery under their belts so we can't know what the effects are from any of this long term. All I know is 80lbs lighter so far and I am feeling well!! I am 7 months out and still losing.... I am just interested in all sides of this so I can decide for myself what will work for me when I am out far enough to have to worry about it..... I hope you did not mind me asking..... Jackie

I do not mind at all. You are completely right in regards to the Dr.'s not even agreeing. That's why I say I do what works for me and if labs or anything else change in the future I will modify my regimen to accommodate. Congrats! On the 80 lb. loss!!!! K
