I'm having a terrible time with both my protein and my fluid. yesterday I had 5 g protein and 14 oz fluid. Nothing wants to go down, not because it won't, but because I'm so sensitive to textures and tastes that i can't swallow. I'm even having trouble with water. Yesterday was my worst day. Earlier in the week I at least got about 20g and 30 oz. Any suggestions? Maybe tomorrow will be better. Other than that I'm feeling great.

Hi Jennifer, Sorry you are feeling yucky. I can totally relate. During the first few weeks after my surgery...my surgeon told me the main thing was to be sure I stayed hydrated. If you can tolerate the protein drinks...he said that was great...but to stay hydrated while your body adjusts. I could not...and still cannot drink most protein drinks. I recently found one I like....and I am almost a year out. I, like you, am very sensitive to textures and tastes. For now...do what you can to keep some kind of water down....so you don't end up back in the hospital again. Try drinking decaff SF tea. Some people are sensitive to hot/cold after surgery....and you will have to see which your body can tolerate for the time being. Try it both ways...and see how you do. Also try different kinds of crystal lite. I drank watered down juices like apple and grape in the beginning. I also had broth...strained from a can of "real" soup...instead of a can of broth..things like that. Hope you feel better soon. Hang in there...and keep trying sips at a time. Make sure you let your surgeon know you are having difficulties. Take care, Stephanie

Hi Jennifer! I agree with Stephanie...try warmer temperatures...cold gave me cramps in the beginning. Broth and tea were great! I also did well with watered down juices (grape, apple or orange 50/50 with water). As far as the protein, try that Hank's that I already posted about. Good luck! Christine

Hey Jenn. Sorry to hear you are having problems. The temperature test is a good idea. I had to find things that did not make me hurt. Just do the best you can. I used a sippy cup. That helped w/ little sips and not as much air went in. The protein is a trial and error thing to see what you can tolerate. I added powdered milk to anything I could to get protein. 1/3 cup of the powder is 8 more grams of protein. I added it to cream soups, mashed potatoes and anything I could. Keep us posted on your status. Love, Shannon
