Out of curiousity...

Just curious here....surgery is coming up in 9 ( count 'em!) days. I guess everybody's different and you just have to go with the flow in your return to what will be the new normal. BUT....if I come home on a Friday, do you think I would be up to going out on Monday evening???? By "out" I don't mean dancing! My son has a swim meet that I'd like to go to. Not out of town...maybe 20 minutes at the most from my home and I would just be sitting and sipping water or protein....maybe walking a little. I thought it took two or three days for that gas they inflate you with to dissapate or be absorbed by the body but the material I have from the hospital says "several weeks!!" Yikes! I hear about this one and that one visited in the hospital....or just newly at home and hear, "She looks GREAT!!" I don't want to go and make other people uncomfortable if I'm all bloated and stuff.....don't want to sit home if it's just going to make me sad. I would be gone from the house about 4 1/2 hours. Don't want to do something dumb but it seems like I hear a lot of, "Three days later and I was out walking the mall!" Is that really how it is?? If you can remember, I'd love to hear your stories about what you were up to less than a week post-op. THANKS.... OH! Also, about how long did you find you needed sombody around to give you a hand up from a chair or from lying down in the bed. I sure hope that won't last long. Amy

I know I felt good enough for a trip out. I had very little gas and bloating. You may just have to judge by how you feel that day. Lois

I had a 7 hour surgery .. and honestly .. I did not get my pixie wings bac****il about a month later . If you are having Lap .. you may be up to it . I know I councel a lot of patients that are not feeling very well .. week 3 ... most have open ... but some of my lap patients are up and running soon after surgery . I can only tell you how I felt .. and I can tell you .. my butt stayed close to the recliner .. Each day you do get to feeling better .. it is all in how you heal I guess and what type of surgery you have . Best wishes to you . Natalie

Thanks Natalie! Mine is a LAP RNY.....I'm just kind of doing what I usually do with other things....psyching myself up for the worst, hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Kinda like that party you go to when you really don't want to.....I'm hoping the usual will happen, my sense of humor will stick by me....and I'll have the best time of anybody at the party. The second night home, my husband has a prior committment he absolutely has to keep....so three of my neighbors are coming to stay with me. I hopeful that between the stupid stuff I'll say under pain medicine and them having a little wine....that I will laugh enough (ouch!) to get a lot of that gas out. BTW I certainly respect your position on the MYSPACE thing. Months before the bad publicity came out I was digging into that because of my son. I emailed every parent I knew and cautioned them to get rid of it. He was "solicited" for lack of a better word by a woman (you don't hear about that much) and I checked her out. You could access porn shots from her website. I about blew a gasket. Terrifying. She wanted to set up a date with him. Lots of the parents listened to their kids.....and said I was over-reacting...it's harmless. It took a while but then it came out in the news and many of those parents have come back to me with an apology and a thank you. It's a bad, worthless site. It needs to go. Take care, Amy

Hi Amy! I came home on Sunday with terrible gas pains. I thought they would NEVER go away but by Tuesday afternoon I was fine (Wednesday night I went to church). Another girl who has surgery the same day as I did was out and about on Monday. So, it really is an individual thing. You will have to see how you feel but from what I understand, the bad parts usually last a couple of days...you may feel some effect for a month but I don't believe it is enough to keep you locked away! Also, my mom left Tuesday and I have been handling it on my own ever since. I prepared well by purchasing lots of juice and water ahead because remember you can't lift more than 10 pounds or so for about a month. Hope that helped! Christine

Hey Christine! Oh yeah.....you're the one I think about! I'm keeping the visual of you trucking along with your slurpee as a fresh out post op!!! And I keep telling myself it's all about attitude.....and you have had such a good one right along. I know you miss your mom but...that's kinda like being on your honeymoon....I loved my honeymoon and I had the best time but.....what really exited me was getting to come home and start my new life. Or it's nice to get the rest and help in the hospital when you have a baby (I adopted but still had to stay at the hospital almost two weeks and help care for my son in the NICU)....you just wanna get home and be the mom. So for this....I liken it to being pregnant for two years (my time on the list)....and I've been in labor since May 23rd when I got my date so I am READY to "give birth" to this new weight loss life and just feel like.....bring it on baby....whatever it is, whatever it takes!!! Yeeehaaaa!!! Amy

HI Amy. Good guestion. It is really going to depend on you. I had surgery on Wednesday, didn't really have any gas pain at all. Went home on Friday and out Christmas shopping for a couple of hours with my mom on Sunday. You may have to wait and see how you are feeling. Courtney

Hi, Amy! I had open RNY and was out furniture shopping the day after I got home (I was in the hospital for 2.5 days). I felt great. My mom about died when I wasn't tired from going store to store all day long. I did crash at the end of the day, though. I also didn't need any help in and out of bed/chairs after the first day in the hospital. Of course everyone's different, but this was my experience. LB

Hey Amy....I had my lap RNY on 31May. I was ok to walk a little then rest the first few days home. I think like the others say it really is all up to what your body can handle as we are all so diffierent. I know that I went to my sons soccer game a couple days after I was home. I was ok but I had my chair to sit and my water. Your body will let you know honey. Go with that. Hugs! Shele
