Protein Drinks
Crystal,
Hi! Congrats on your upcoming surgery. Here's a list of websites. Do you drink coffee? If so let me know. There are many ways you can mix your protein to achieve a taste you'll like and stick with. When you've mixed your proteinns are you mixing with ice? That is one reason for lumps, and another is boiling water. Both cause clumping. Also are you using a shaker cup, that has a lid with a grate in it? That will help in mixing.

A lot of members swear by Isopure. I personally didn't like the few I tried, but it's worth it to give it a try. Also, you may want to wait until after your surgery. Your tastes will change drastically! The first two weeks after my surgery I ADORED the green apple protein power. I think it was Dymatize Elite. After the second month I couldn't stomach it and gave away what I had left. I thought it tasted like green apple Jolly Ranchers, especially when ice cold or "slushy". Later, though, I thought it was awful. So don't throw away what you have tried so far. Also, my surgeon's nutritionist gave us samples of SmartForme. They are available online at smartforme.com. They are a little pricier than some, but to me the flavor is great. Again, they are a powder. There are also some liquid concentrates available at the ishophere.biz site (I think that's it - it was listed in the post above mine). I tried some of them and they weren't too bad, especially the pineapple/orange.
Good luck! I live in Mathews, so if you want to talk or anything drop me an email.
Hi Crystal,
I am a couple weeks pre-op and hope my tastes won't change too much but halfway expect them to after surgery. I'm like you....I like a more watery fruity drink as opposed to milky and thickish. I've had great success with a few products. If you can find ProComplex (I hear it's being discontinued) in the strawberry, that mixes great with crystal light. I would mix two scoops to a pitcher of either the Orange Sunrise or the Strawberry Tangerine and drink it over the course of a day. That was about 50 grams plus the hydration of the liquid so killed two birds with one stone.
I have tried a couple flavors of the Nectar. The Fuzzy Navel is great in orange crystal light. I also like the Lemon Tea flavored one. That I can mix with plain water but it's even better mixed with crystal light tea. The Nectar is aspartame free so it's not like you are getting a double dose of that which is what concerns me when mixing with the crystal light. That also comes in "to go" packets which I find very convenient.
But my favorite are the products from Unjury. Yes...they do seem pricey. But you truly get what you pay for. The quality and service of that company is phenomenal. They are based in Virginia so your product arrives at your door the following day. Shipping is a flat $5.00 regardless of what you order. If you order five containers or more.....they ship it for free. The first container is $18.95 and subsequent ones in the same order are $17.95. Each container has 17 servings which offer 23 g protein each. At bedtime I take a cup of ho****er...I just get it from the coffee maker, dump out a little and replace that with a splash of cold to cool it down a tad. I put TWO scoops of the chocolate unjury in that and mix it up like cocoa. That right there has the least protein taste/smell of anything. I've also added a scoop of the unflavored to this or that (like cream of chicken soup or pudding, ) the strawberry is pretty good in a strawberry based crystal light. I find this product helps me to push my protein over the edge and get a higher level with a lower volume of liquid. I swear by it.
They say our healing is so much better/faster if we can pump up the protein ahead of time. It is very difficult to get around the protein taste/smell. It's just there. What helps me is that I go out of my way not to smell it and most of the time if I don't go there.....then the protein taste is much less also. So as you take a drink make sure that you have exhaled and don't sniff as you sip. Sounds like one more thing to remember and maybe kind of silly but..... It makes a difference! Good luck to you!

Hey Crystal,
Congrats on your upcoming date...it will be here before you know it. I had my surgery last Friday and I am like you...very picky about protein...hate the smell, hate the taste. I bought Isopure lemonade and it smells and tastes like real lemonade. The bottle is quite big but has 40 grams of protein. The good thing with Isopure is you can go to Vitamin Shoppe and buy individual bottles of different flavors and try them all!
Good luck!
Christine
Hey Christine, I like lemonade so I am going to order some to try I don't live anywhere near a Vitamin Shoppe so I do my shopping over the internet. How do you feel a week later, be honest? I have two daughters (5 & 2) and just wanted to know what it's like a week later. I have to stay at my mom's after the surgery because I need someone to help with my girls. My husband leaves for work at 3am. But I would love just to go to my house but I keep thinking it's so much pain that I need someone with me all the time. Thanks for the help.
Crystal
Hi Crystal...Before you order...I had purchased several bottles of of the Isopure (different flavors). I decided to drink the lemonade that I said was so yummy...well, when I looked at the label, turns out the lemonade is not protein...dang! No wonder it tasted so good!!! Darn it!! The other Isopures (premixed bottles) are tolerable...I actually mixed the lemonade in and it kinda took the edge off. I do about 4 oz at a time as I quickly tire of the protein but know I need to get it in. A lot of people use crystal light tea with Nectar Fuzzy Navel protein and say that it tastes like peach tea...I haven't tried it myself. Sorry for the misinfo .
As far as how I'm feeling, the first about 5 days were rough then all of a sudden I felt better...like a million times better!!! I feel GREAT but still get tired and need to lay down at different times. I have been walking almost 2 miles per day for the past 2 days and that is really wearing me out but energizing me at the same time...very weird! There is a huge difference here though...I have no one to deal with but myself. I have only done minor picking up and a load or 2 of laundry here and there but if it doesn't get done...WHO CARES...I would be different about it if I had kids...you may feel better staying with your mom (or even hiring a "baby sitter" or "mothers helper"...will school be out by then? maybe you can get a high school kid to come for even 3 or 4 hours during the day...
Hope that helps! Please let me know if I can answer any other questions for you.
Christine
