Traveling and our diet

This being away from the comforts of a kitchen is a headache. It burns me up, too, to buy food of which I consume such a very small portion. I am fortunate the school is paying for me to waste this food. All I brought with me is plenty of liquid protein and a few So. Beach and Power Crunch Bars. The motel has a large breakfast bar (gratis), full of carbs. All I can have is hard boiled eggs and Canadian Bacon. No thanks on the Canadian Bacon and I had one hard boiled egg yesterday, my tolerance for the month. Just now I picked the bran flakes out of some Raisin Bran, after drinking my Isopure and some tea. Will certainly be glad to get home this afternoon, back to my cottage cheese and yogurt. Lois SW VA

My last salad there was McD's w grilled chicken. I simply was not in the mood and ate very little of it. Such a waste. I did manage some beans at Baco Tell on the way back and have had cottage cheese since I got back. Thanak Goodness! I feel like I have done some diet damage, though. I will have to crack down this week prior to my Dr.Kellum visit. Thanks, Tink, Lois

Lois, I'm dreading traveling (we're moving to Texas on Saturday and it's a 3 day drive). My husband went and got me one of those little plug in coolers so I could travel with my yogurt, deli meats and cheese sticks. We've been on overnight excursions but this will be the longest we've been on the road since surgery. I'm hoping I can find stuff to eat...all the hotels say is that they have a traditional southern hot breakfast which I assume means there will be lots of biscuits and greasy gravy and bacon. The one good thing is we have a small daughter so if I order a kids plate at restaurants nobody really gives me any problems . Anyway, I'm sure you'll be glad to be home. I know I can't wait to be done with traveling. Liz

The travel wouldn't be so bad were it notr for being surrounded by 6 adolescents all of whom want SOME kind of food I can't eat. Lois

Hey Lois! I feel for you too! These past couple of weeks have been a real pain in the (well you know). First I was away at a conference for a week. When I finally got home, we left for a week long vacation. Neither of my hotels had a fridge so leftovers were out of the question. I felt extremely wasteful. Then there was the continental breakfast. I did use the milk to make up my protien shakes. As a result of not having my food around (and shear laziness in finding a grocery store for non-perishable protien rich snacks), I developed some BAD carb habits. We had a bag of pretzels & goldfish crackers, and I got hooked. My husband ate the jerky & nuts I packed, but I didn't have the heart to yell at him over it. Thankfully, I did do quite a bit of walking while I was away because I have only been to the gym 3 times this month It is really good to be back! One of the few perks of going back to work is that it is putting me back on my schedule again. Eating carbs is difficult when I don't bring them with me I've even talked 2 ladies from the office into joining the water aerobics classes here at Va Tech with me (a free perk for employees). Between the two of them I will be going 4 days a week, and I plan on getting to Curves 3 days. I'm sure you are excited to be coming back home! At least it doesn't look like you developed any bad habits in your absence (like me ) Julie 237/189/165/135 preop/current/dr's goal/my goal

Thank goodness I was able to walk. The two evenings I walked around several connected parking lots several times. Today I walked probably 1 1/2 miles around the walkway outside the 5 courts. Sure felt like morem but they pay me to coach.

Lois~ I travel a lot, too and have had these same problems. I bought one of those coolers that can be plugged into the car or the wall in the hotel room and I carry yogurt, cottage cheese, string cheese and lunch meats to have. This also enables me to store leftovers...which I rarely eat! I order off of the kids menu if I can find anything healthy. I do not usually eat off of the bars because most of the food is too greasy for me. I do not dump on sugar but I get sick as dog from grease. Tammy

Hi Tammy, When I have the tennis team along I take a cooler. Drinks I remember to pack. I am going to have to take your advice and pack MY things too, instead of just considering my students. Thanks Lois
