I also posted on the insurance forum but I know the VA forum is filled with well versed people My Girlfriend had WLS in 2001 at the time her DH was in the military and tricare covered the procedure. Now she is down 250 pounds and has the excess skin issue but her DH is no longer in the Military. The company he works for is has Blue Cross. ok heres my question do you know if blue cross will cover her plastic surgery if she had her WLS under a diffenrent insurance provider?

Hi Heather, I know this is a stupid question, but why doesn't she just call Blue Cross and ask them? I don't know insurance so I don't know if that's a smart thing to do or not, but it seems so logical to me? But then, what do I know, as I said!! I'm not one of the 'well versed people' on this board!!! love donna

Well you make a good point Donna but sometimes when you are dealing with Insurance companies it's good to come armed with all the information first that way if you have to fight them you have a better chance or winning How are you doing today Donna?

Hi Heather, I figured it was something to do with that, but from simple minds come simple solutions!! I think I just made that up - isn't that clever. I say think, cause sometimes I hear/read things and then forget and remember them as my own!! Anyway, I see Leland has given you a much better and more informative response than me. I'm doing fine, just cleaning this a.m. and then errands and stuff this afternoon. How 'bout you!! love donna

Probably not. But it depends on what flavor of Blue Cross they have. If their version of Blue Cross covers WLS, then there is a maybe. Those insurance plans that do cover it, only do it when it is medically necessary. So she may have to see a dermatologist and prove she is getting a rash from the extra skin. She just needs to start with her insurance co, see what they do cover. Then move from there. I am in a similiar situation. Anthem Blue Cross covered my surgery. My employer just switched to Optima this month. Optima won't touch me with a 10 ft pole. They dont cover WLS, so they dont want to cover me because I have had it. They don't cover any followup care, any future visits to my surgeon, nutrition, nothing. If my PCP even marks on the form that I have had a GB, Optima will deny the claim for the appt. Needless to say, I am a little frustrated. My employer knows I had it. Its no secret. WHy they couldn't ask if I would be covered, I don't know!

Heather, My guess on this would be that if Blue Cross covers "medically neccessary" plastic surgery, and she can get her doc to say it is neccessary, then they'll cover it. It shouldn't matter what insurance she had prior to now unless they consider WLS a "pre-existing condition". Liz
