Advice for eating while traveling internationally?
Hi Everybody,
I am 11 months post-surgery, RNY, doing very well, basically have just reached my goal.![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/smile.gif)
I'm very good about taking my supplements and am in very good health. On Tuesday, my 7-year-old daughter and I are leaving for a 2 1/2 week trip to China! I am excited, and also a little nervous about how I will handle eating during the trip. I do like Chinese food and am sure I can find things I will enjoy eating. However, I am used to eating really low-fat, having lots of fruit, packing my own breakfasts and lunches, making protein shakes in my blender each morning for breakfast, and basically eating foods I don't really expect to find much of in China, such as cottage cheese, string cheese sticks, fresh berries, etc.
I plan to take a bunch of protein bars with me for treats and making sure I get enough protein, and there are a few other things I can take, but of course I'm not taking a blender with me, and basically I need to cope with whatever is available and safe to eat there. I expect it will be quite different from my usual food choices! I'm going to try not to end up eating too much rice and noodles, but have any of you traveled internationally since surgery and do you have any advice about coping?
In particular, I am slightly worried about feeling out-of-control of my food choices and getting into bad habits. It's hard when i get out of my normal, stable routine, but I really don't want to gain weight on this trip or obsess about food either.
Any good advice?
Thanks in advance!
Cathy in Houston :)

You might look at buying a blender ball-http://www.betterfitnessproducts.com/blender-bottle.html
so you can pack protein to make shakes with. It really does mix the protein well. I like it, and its alot easier to clean.
I've never traveled to China so I just wanted to mention the blender ball and wish you good luck! I hope you have a great time!

I think your taking protein bars is a good idea. At least a lot if Chinese food is veggies and meat. Enjoy your trip and just make the best choices you can. You have to try to live a regular life.

If you like tofu, it is prevalent in Chinese cuisine. I would pass on the rice and focus and beef, chicken and seafood.
I'll be traveling to France at the end of August. I'll be taking turkey jerky, cashews and protein powder. I figure wonderful cheese will be easy to find.
Bon voyage!

Thanks everybody for your good advice! Yes I do like tofu and I do like vegetables and I can eat meat, fish, and chicken, so I'll just try to be careful of the rice and other carbs. I'm also going to take some of my WonderSlim protein pudding mixes, since those will pack easily and I like them. Now I just have to figure out how to fit everything into our suitcases!! This will be a special trip for us. I adopted my daughter from China when she was a baby and now I am taking her back to be able to build her own memories, visit some of the famous sights, and visit her orphanage and meet some of the nannies who took care of her.
So eating is certainly secondary, I just want to do my best to stay healthy and well balanced.
Any additional advice is welcome!

honey, trust me , the cottage cheese will spoi long before you even get ther and you cannot take fresh fruit into the country. string cheese is really iffy to! they have strict laws about bringing fresh fruit and veg and it is a very very lomg flight. perishables will not make it. you can get fresh fruits of all kinds there! Have been to China many years ago,in hotels then they served a western style b-fast and other meals were very well balanced and mosly grilled roasted or sauteed in a wok. jus****ch the rice and noodles and you should be fine!! If you have a guide with you they can help you procure fruit. little single serve pouches of peanut butter are great to travel withtoo!!
