One week out!
Had surgery Dec. 22 -- although at first I didn't think it was going to happen!
First thing the nurse asked me when I was brought back to the pre-op area was if I still got my cycle. When I said "yes,", he told me I had to give a urine sample to ensure I wasn't pregnant. I thought he was joking, seeing I'm on the other side of 50.
After not having anything to drink since midnight (and it was now 10:00), I told him the chances of getting a sample were slim. Wasn't able to, and so they took me back and got my all hooked up to the IV, took my blood, etc. At this point, the waiting did me in (I have always been very anxious about this step I was taking, and the pre-op room made it very real). Luckily, I had various family members and our pastor there, so they took turns coming in and visiting me. When the tears started, the nurses were all incredibly kind and came over to reassure me that I was making the right decision, had the best surgeon, etc.
Dr. G came and confirmed that without a urine sample, they couldn't proceed with the surgery. At this point, my pastor came in to pray that I would be able to do it! Probably the first time he's had to pray that specific request.
There was another delay once I was in surgery as Dr. G found some scar tissue that had to be biopsied before they could continue. All in all, my surgery lasted about 3 hours. Went in at 11:30 and was back in my room at 5:30. Long day!
Apart from the pain from the gas, I felt good and walked twice that night. Felt great Thursday and they ended up letting me go home Thursday evening. Started feeling poorly Christmas Day night with aches and chills, which lasted to Sunday. Must have picked up a bug that was here and gone in 24 hours.
Am having some good days and some bad days. Not in pain at all, but am having some bowel issues. But...I've been moved to pureed foods for two weeks - guess that's a milestone I should be celebrating!
Thanks for all the encouragement y'all have given. Am looking forward to joining some of you on the Losers' Bench! Happy New Year!

Congratulations on being on the loser's bench. I sure understand the "surgery almost not happening" thing. I was kicked out 2 times from the pre-op room when having plastics.
Sounds like you are doing well. You'll be so happy you did this. Keep us up on your progress.

I too just had surgery. Mine was Dec. 21st. I almost didn't go through with it because I was so scared, even though I had spent the last 6 months going through education pre-op classes. But I can say now I have no regrets. I didn't have to do the urine sample, but two days after surgery I started my period-which I had not planned on for a couple of weeks.I was not prepared for that. I'm having some bowel issues too. I think I'm still eating and sipping to fast and I've found I do better on broth than the cream based soups.
Congratulations and I look forward to learning from everyone.

Congratulatins Mominkaty!! Hang on because you are on the ride of a lifetime! I too had surgery Dec. 22nd. But, mine was last year 2009. It is hard to believe that I was wearing a size 22 at the time of surgery and now wear a 6-8. I have to second what missnannajean says. Keep a pair of your pants that you wore before surgery and put them on next year. You will be amazed at how much your body will change in 12 months. Gastric Bypass to me was kinda like having a baby. You forget the pain because of the joy it brings. Good luck on your journey!!!!!! Happy New Year and New You!
