I am not trying to scare you Sheila but if you have low potassium you need to speak to your surgeon.   I had a Aunt who her potassium was so low she had a major stoke and it ended up that she had some major brain damage from the stroke.    So I wouldn't mess around with it !!!  Good luck and hope the doc can help you get those levels up in the normal range.

Hey thanks for the information. Did your aunt have any kind of WLS. I started having problems with my  potassium levels when the Dr,. prescribed me fluid pills with a diet pill for weight loss.  Then i started having high blood pressure issues later and the BP meds i am on have a diuretic in them. I take a potassium supplement but i still have to watch my levels. I have been to the ER twice with chest pains thinking i was having a heart attack and it was my potassium levels to low. Just really worried about this all if i have the bypass...... Thanks so much Sheila

 No Sheila,

My Aunt died about 15 or so years ago but never had a weight problem at all.    After the stroke she took potassium and ate at least one banana a day.    Hope you get your levels up where they should be.

Is potassium something we malabsorb? I know alot of BP meds and dieretics can cause low potassium, so if you have the surgery, lose wieght, and are able to get off the meds, that should help. Definately ask your surgeon about it.  But if your levels are managed with supplements now, you should be able to manage them with supplements after surgery too. Your surgeon should be able to tell you how it might affect surgery and recovery and how having had wls might make your low levels better or worse.
