Protein?? Question for all
Good Happy Halloween TMB!!
I am 7 years post from my GB WLS and I for the last 7 years start my morning off with a protein shake of some sort.
My question or thought on this is how many of you are getting in enough protein ( 80 grams or more a day)
When eating do you always start with your protein first?
I know 7 years ago when I was a newbie this was the rule of thumb, 7 years later I am just wanting to know what the surgeons, RD's etc, are requiring how to get in all the protein amounts.
I noticed that early on from my surgery that starting my day with a shake would work best for me; I never liked breakfast, I cant eat until later in the day, so I just start of with a shake. 7 years out I still try and start with protein first, however I can honestly say, I still eat off of a small salad plate and a small fork or spoon..LOL
Just wanting to reconnect with the TMB and see where everyone is on their WLS journey...
just wanting to know your thoughts on protein.....

Hey Mel,
I am just over 3 yrs out and I still do a protein drink everyday. It is usually in the afternoon as a pick me up!
I too still eat of sm plates with small forks and spoons. I find at home when I dont I tend to overserve myself and eat too much!
I was always taught 70+ grams of protein a day and get most of it from food. And drink an ouce of water for every gram of protein, at least.
This has always worked for me and I feel if it aint broke don't fix it!! Now, that said I do eat a lot more than most who are where I am because I malabsorb so badly.
Thats my story and i am sticking to it!!

Well I am just 3 1/2 years out and I will say this....in the last few months I had gotten way off track of the protein. I had tired of protein drinks so had backed off and was not drinking them at all anymore. But to be hoenst with all my other issues I just do not eat enough protien to get anywhere close to 80 grams a day. And two weeks ago my hair started falling out again. So two weeks ago when I got back on track I started adding at least two in a day and my hair is not falling out, I feel better, and the scale is moving in the right direction. Made a believer out of me!!! Stocking up on some new proteins and becoming a protein junkie again.

I think I need to add in more protein also. I still have been doing the protein shake in the morning but maybe not enough at meal times. Picked up some grilled chicken breasts that Stephanie (I think) suggested. Going to try and cut out anything that isn't protein. That is how I was for the first year and half and did so well. Probably why I am gaining some. Probably why I feel hungry more often.
Good morning, Mel! You have rattled my cage. I don't know how much protein I'm consuming. A good reason to start journaling in some shape or fashion.
What works for me is pure protein for breakfast. My usual is 2 hard boiled eggs over a two or so hour period. If I eat cereal or even a protein bar, I tend to get the shakes mid-morning. I do get tired of eggs but I have to remind myself that a little boredom is better than feeling lousy.
I recently purchased some Nectar Grapefruit flavor. A problem I have with traditional protein shakes is how sweet they are. That's why your Unjury Chicken Soup sounds appealing. I will try the sample option. Thanks!

Janet, even before my WLS I never really ate breakfast...first I have to take meds first thing in the morning and then wait 1 hour before eating; that is usually right about the time I am getting ready for work~I have never been a good breakfast eater, skinny, fat, in between...never, so years ago I just went with the protein drinks...it was fast and simple. I love omlets and when I get a chance I will have a good omlet; for a while I was making omlets in a baggie that worked for a while; take my two eggs, and add veggies, meat and some milk, blend and then but the baggie in boiling water for about 5-10 until fluffy and cooked....very tasty...once on my plate I would add some cheese...may have to put this on my breakfast menu this week....LOL
but honestly it would be my lunch....I just dont like food on my tummy in the mornings..
Looking fwd to visiting with you next weekend...

Mel, question about the baggie omelet. Do you Pam the baggie? This sounds like a great idea. Boy, the variations are endless! Thanks.
I look forward to seeing you, too!

Happy Halloween All -
I too always start my day off with a protein shake. Why? Well, simply because it's fast, easy....convenient. You know, most days I'm in a hurry to get off to work on time so simple and quick works for me.
I have to say, on most day, I do try to get to my daily protein requirement (80 grams or more).
2+ yrs post op....and it works for me. We're all different, so I say.... finds what works for you and stick to it.
Hugs,
Lisa
