In need of food suggestions...

I start back to school, and it has all sorts of challenges as far as eating is concerned.  I have not found many frozen meals that are not high in sodium, sugar or fat, and that is using the smart ones.  I am really worried about eating in a restaurant.  Does anyone have any suggestions for a newbie pouch? (3 months out)

Not sure about the newbie part as far as what I am suggesting to you.   Fage greek yogurt ( I add sweetner to it and then fresh or frozen fruit,   Cottage chesse with cinnamon and splenda and fruit, or cottage cheese with tomatoes and onions,  Thin lunch meat roll ups ( I buy Oscar Mayer thin deli 98% FF Turkey, ham or roast beef and roll it up with FF cheese and dip that in mustard.    Apple with a little peanut butter,  I know I was eating TV dinners by 3 months post op but I believe I could only eat half, Taco Bell's buritos ( insides only ),   I would eat lean cuisine TV dinners.    Anytime you eat anything frozen like that the sodium will be high.    Hope some of these suggestions will help you,   You could also do soups since the cooler weather is somewhat here and if you like them.    Good luck with going back to school.

Since you've mentioned frozen dinners, I guess you'll have access to a microwave and refridge?  If so, the sky is the limit.  Like Viv says, lunch meat roll-ups are great esp paired with string cheese.  Tuna, chicken or egg salad and crackers, one meatball with spaghetti sauce and cheese, chili, leftover pot roast or basically anything leftover from dinner the night before.  I grill nearly every night and take my leftovers to work-1/2 chicken breast, small lean pork chop, sliced London broil, leftover steak, etc.  Then I take some coleslaw with FF dressing, a dab of potatoes or a piece of fruit to go with it.

Do you buy your London Broil's from Target?  They had a sale that I believe may be until today for $2.99 a pound.  Not sure how long the sales last or when they start.

Actually, I buy my London Broil from Tom Thumb.  They put them on sale every other month or so for $1.99/lb.  I usually buy 10 or so and freeze them, then I grill them to a nice medium rare-yummy.

So you like your cow still mooing?  Yuck lol...

I do that with hbmeat from target.  The 93/7 they put on sale every 6 weeks from 4.49 lb to 2.79.

I travel with my job.  If you must do fast food, my fav is Wendy's chili on top of their naked baked potato.  That's two meals for me.  Ask for some cheddar and sour cream if the mood hits you...extra protein!  And we do need some fat.
What I have found is that I do much better when I plan ahead.  Check out The World According to Eggface's blog.  Lots of yummy meat loaves that freeze well.  Her "bites" recipes are very good, too.  I bake store bought frozen meatballs with some low carb spaghetti sauce and mozzarella sprinked on top.  I freeze those in one portion sizes.  I cook on the weekend for the upcoming week.  That really saves me so much time and thinking about what to do for dinner.  Best of luck with your journey!

I have found ther is not a lot in frozen meals that I can eat....especially when I was 3 months out.  So I started making some dishes and freezing them in small portions (acutally Paige and I do this together then swap which gives us more choices and we only have to cook once a month or so this way.  We put them in small 1/2 cup containers and freeze them.  Then I can take them in my lunch and heat them in the microwave about 2 min and I am good.  I try to stay with casserole type things as I find these freeze and reheat nicely....things like I make a turkey fajoli that has differnt beans and ground turkey, shredded carrots and canned tomatoes and seasonings (everything but the pasta).  Or I have a chicken enchllada recipe i make. Or chili etc.  that way I have high protein low fat carb and no hidden sugars....something I have had to watch with the RNY.  Then I also wil take unwhiches....a sandwhich using lettuce leaves as the bread with lunchmeat and cheese. Greek yogurt is good or sf jello or pudding in the cups.  I bring string cheese as a snack as "peeling" in keeps me busy longer LOL  But as others have said....plan ahead is the best way to avoid being unprepared and making poor choices.  I found a great lunch bag at target that looks like a tote bag that I take with me everywhere with waters, protein drinks and my food for breakfast and lunch for the day.

Taco soup is another great thing to add to the list to make and freeze in small portions.  Make the "guts" of chicken enchiladas. It tastes the same and is yummy when you get tired of the same old thing.  Lasagna "guts" is the same...Sometimes my sister makes a separate small pan and leaves out the noodles and it tastes just like regular lasagna.  Pulled Pork, Taco meat, things like that will work.  I would eat smart ones or lean cuisine if I was doing frozen early out.  The sodium shouldn't hurt you unless you are not supposed to have it for some other medical reason.  You can make protein pudding with sf instant pudding made w/ ff milk, then some sf cool whip and a couple of scoops of vanilla or chocolate protein powder.

When in doubt I always keep a pouch of low sodium tuna and individual lite ranch dressing and 100 calorie pack of wheat crackers and individual serving of no sugar applesauce in my work bag. It never spoils and is quick to put the dressing in the pouch and quick and yummy to eat. Also Ostrim peppered sausage sticks are good  14 grms of protein in them . I keep one in my bag also. I take a cooler bag that has pockets in it to work everyday. I keep an ice keeper and my water and lunch in it. I got it at Walmrt or Target. Really comes in handy.
