Thank you Nurse Diva for your words of wisdom, but I guess I won't be using them after all.  I had mentioned hospice to Mom several times in some of our phone conversations, and I guess she finally asked her doctor about it.  She called me Saturday to tell me that she'd met with the coordinator and they'd gone through all the paperwork and everything and that she'd decided it was what she wanted.  I'm glad she's finally made the decision , but I'm sad too, I know it's the only logical conclusion, but it's still hard....  Thankfully my brother (who she lives with) was very receptive to it also....  Our younger sister was not, but she will respect Mom's wishes, I hope....

I'm going up for a visit on the 1st, so I'll get more info then....

KAREN-you know I"m a HOSPICE nurse-right? Your mom has made one of the most important, bravest decisions a person can make. Please try to support her and help her not to "second guess" herself...BUT..that being said..also...ALWYS remember...it is NOT a binding contract and Medicare rules clearly state she can REVOKE anytime she wishes to "seek agressive treatment"....But, for her sake, sounds she she's been thru enough painful treatments. My heartfelt prayers for all of you-Now- go ENJOY your mama and her birthday!!

Hi Karen -  What a difficult time that you are going through right now........I"m so sorry but I too think that your mom made the best decision that she feels is right for HER right now and that counts..................as for:  Our younger sister was not, but she will respect Mom's wishes, I hope....    I believe that your sister will come around in time.  Hospice will help her understand what your mother is  going through and help sort out her own feelings too.

When the time came for my mom -  my mom was the opposite - she didn't want anyone next to her watching her die.  Specifically did NOT want Hospice......but when she became somewhat in-coherant - my aunt and I called in Hospice to help US out....and we don't regret it one moment neither did any of our family.
AFter my mom passed - I kept Hospice lady in my life for several weeks to hold me together for Amanda and they gave me several books to read and that really explained alot of what I had been feeling and going through for the 6-8 months PRIOR to my mom's passing..    Ask them about that reading material for your sister when the time comes.....

Karen....my Mom was on hospice for about 2 yrs. before she passed away.   We all grew to love the nurses that came in daily and cared for my Momma.    They were ALL fantastic !!!   Life is what it is.....sometimes we have to ALL do hard things and accept things that we don't want to.   You entire family will be in my thoughts and prayers as you all face this decision and hold your Mom tight.   We all love you and are here for you if you need to talk or just vent.   Remember that God will never put you through more than you can bare.  ( I have to keep reminding myself of this one ).   Love you and take care of yourself and support  your Mom at this time of need in her life.

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

GOD GRANT ME THE SERENITY TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I CAN NOT CHANGE;   COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS THAT I CAN;  AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE !!!!    THIS IS MY DAILY PRAYER.

Karen,

I lost my mom June 26th with pancreatic Cancer. Having gone through traditional home health, in facility hospice, and 6 weeks of home hospice. I would pick Hospice! The hospice nurses gave alot more time and gave from the heart. I appreciated them so much! Exspecially at the end. As a paramedic and having a sister who is an RN it was really hard to let "just anyone" take care of our mother. It got to a point were we had to... for our own mental health. ( Daughters should not give mother's enemas. )

My twin sister would have prefered we left her in facility, but she had to come home or she (being as stubborn as she is) wouldn't have past as beautiful and as calm as she did. That was a blessing I wish for everyone who faces this... smooth transitions and acceptance.

My prayers go to you and your family over the coming months. It isn't an easy road but rely on faith to get you through. Hugs!

Prayers for your mom and your family.

My daughter-in-law's mother has been on hospice care for over a year now.  Thank God for Medicare and hospice care.  Those folks are miracles.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!
