Occassionally we get something emailed to us at work that I find may be  interesting to newbies or just to remind us of WHY need to be keeping a food diary.   I am just as guilty as NOT keeping one but after reading all of this ......WOW    - I need to get back into that habit because I do better when I do keep the diary.........GOOD LUCK EVERYONE OUT THERE !!

One way to make sure your diet maintains an adequate balance, variety and moderation is to keep a food diary—a record of everything you consume each day. Not only will you discover exactly what you're eating, but you'll learn how much you really eat, and whether you eat for reasons other than hunger.

Keeping a food diary can highlight potential trouble spots and help you come up with a plan for building better habits. A diary also helps you keep track of food you might otherwise overlook—the leftover pasta you nibbled while doing the dishes, for example.  Your food diary can be as simple as carrying a notebook with you or recording your meals in a chart or program on-line or you may have some app in your IPOD Like I do !!  But I don't use it !!  lol

Immediately record each food and beverage item as it is consumed.
  • Include all ingredients used in the preparation of each item.
  • Record only the food portion eaten.
  • Wherever possible, include the product description or brand name.
  • Indicate whether the food was freshly prepared, frozen, canned or otherwise modified or processed.
  • Provide specific information on how cooked food was prepared (fried, baked, broiled, deep-fried, boiled, steamed, etc.).
  • Identify all beverages by brand name, when possible.
  • Analyze your food diary to identify any of these patterns: ·         Eating when you're not hungry ·         Skipping meals ·         Eating between meals ·         Overeating ·         Undereating ·         Eating the same foods all the time
Use your diary as a tool for learning which foods contribute to a nutritious diet and which foods do not. Then, turn that information into a healthier eating plan.

I do MUCH better when I diary/journal. That's why I find the "Sept Accountability" thread so helpful in planning out my days.
