Bread and Pasta???
Not really - MUCH MUCH FARTHER out from surgery than right away - I didn't start eating pasta and rice (tiny amts at a time****il almost 2 yrs out !!
Just think: Breads and pasta - implode when they get wet...........they get larger and can take up the extra room you have in your new stomach and well - doesn't leave much room to eat the things that you really should be concentrating on eating..............
AND they are starch !! complex carbs.............fills you up ....but then you are hungry again really soon - no benefit nutritionally...

- Pease check out Dr. Connie Stapleton's Website. A lot of good information on there for all WLS patients regardless of the surgery you chose. Good luck to all and I'm here for you if you want to send me an email. I'll answer it as soon as possible.

It depends. Some people handle them better than others.
I did not eat much of either my first year because 1) couldn't eat more than a bite or 2 anyway and 2) didn't want to stall my weight loss.
Now that I am at goal I eat both and can definitely eat more than a couple of bites at 2 years out but I choose not to for the reasons Phyllis mentioned. Empty calories and I get hungry too soon afterwards. I have maintained my weight so far by eating protien first at every meal so that doesn't leave much room for carbs, other than a few bites that I enjoy very much.
My husband still fixes spaghetti and meat sauce all the time (he does all the cooking) and laughs at my bowl that is mostly meat sauce and parmesean cheese with just a few noodles in it

I have never had a problem with eating either of them. I started with DRY toast cuz plain white bread turns into a dough ball and can definately cause problems. As far as pasta goes-I can pack away a lot but I'm also 3 years out. I have been very fortunate that there isn't ANY food I can't eat (except milk in large quantities) and was still able to reach goal in about a year.

RNY revision from lapband 7/30/07...TT/BL 10/9/08 and at GOAL
Bread and pasta need to be of the whole wheat variety and as people have mentioned that you need to watch the carbs. I am unable to handle pasta at almost 8 months out at all and it only has been about a month I could handle bread and even then I use the sandwich thins only. As far as rice I use only brown rice and in small amounts. Breads, pasta and rice will expand when they absorb fluid so it can make eating anythings else difficult. I would talk to a nutritionist or dietician and follow their recommendations so that you are able to be successful with utilizing your weight loss tool because we are all different on what we can handle and or weight loss goals are different. Some foods may be gone forever from your diet. I do not know about some people but when I do not drink carbonated beverages at all because the Carbon Dioxide can and will come out of solution in the pouch and cause the pouch to expand. So, once I saw my surgeon and started my weight-loss journey I have stopped them period. I also try to avoid sugar as much as possible. You will find after your surgery that there are some things you can handle at all or or only a little bit. I personally can not tolerate chicken very much and the sad thing is I love chicken breast and so does my family. I try new ways to all the time to and eventually I should be able to tolerate it. Keep to your nutritional plan and explore new foods as you progress. As part of a healthy lifestyle some things you have to eliminate from your old way of life to be successful in the long run.
