Hey....if he has done 12 - 15 then you won't be a guinea pig!!!   I am sure that his patients have had no problems with the VSG that he has done on them.    Relax....sounds like the ole fear of the unknown i****ting you hard.    I am sure that his history with VSG will be just as good as with his other surgeries with time.    Take a deep breath and relax.....you have 9 more days till your life begins again......pray about it and I know that you will get a peace !!!!  We are all here for you if you need to vent or talk and it will be OK....I promise !!!!!   Congrats on your upcoming surgery !!!

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

I too have heard wonderful things about him BUT with that being said...I chose a wonderful general surgeon years ago to do my lapband.  I was the 15th one he did.  It was a total nightmare (as were #'s 16 and 17 as they were friends of mine).  All 3 of us ended up with failed surgeries.  I still trust him implicitly for general surgery but I would never choose an inexperienced surgeon to do a WLS again.  When I had my revision I went to a very experienced WLS who specialized in revisions and had a great result.  Just cuz he's good a one thing doesn't necessarily mean he does all surgeries well.  Experience is the greatest teacher.  My advise is to think long and hard.

My surgeon had only done 15 or so VSG's and I had the easiest surgery and recovery possible with no complications. It is such a simple surgery compared to the RNY, so if you feel he's a good surgeon and has low complications with the RNY, then you probably don't have anything to worry about. But you have to be comfortable, so it's up to you if you trust his skills as a surgeon. I, personally, think surgical skill is more important than sheer number of a certain procedure.

Ask him what complications he has seen in his VSG patients.  Do you have access to a reputable surgeon with more VSG experience?  I think you have to have a great surgeon that you are comfortable with, but I would also want them to have alot of experience in the surgery that they are performing.  Even good surgeons have to learn a skill before they can be a great surgeon at a particular surgery.  If you can find a good surgeon with experience, I would think that they would be a better choice than a good surgeon without experience.  If you can't find a good surgeon with experience, the one you have would probably do fine.  He is still a good surgeon, and your surgery may be the one that makes him a great surgeon for VSG.  At  least he has done more than a dozen.  I wouldn't be comfortable with less.  And if he has seen many complications with VSG, then I would look for someone with more experience. Good luck.
