Hi there,

I did a two week post op diet of Glucerna, diet popsicles and deit jello. all went well.

I am pretty sure I understood Dr. K, I spoke with him directly prior to leaving the hospital and I had my Best freind who stayed with me in surgery there with me and the person I trusted more with driving me home the long drive..there with me. His exact words were clear fluids for two weeks. I asked about protien shakes and he said "no". Not until after my two week visit. I did not ask about protein in the form of clear liquids..and I guess because that had never appealed to me, I seriously did not know that it even exisited..I musthave ingorned anything I ever heard about it...but after several days after my surgery and started to get weak and faint... I asked if there was anything that was clear with protein in it..and found the bullet thingys...or whatever these things are.

Maybe Dr. K assumed I already knew about them, but I think I remember him saying for me to stay on the diet I was on in the hospital. I had no clue there was any protien to speak of in broth...I can tell already..im going to have to learn more about this nutrition buisness...:)

Im feeling great right now though... I have an appointment to see his PA on the 9th and hopefully i will be cleared for more things by then. I have already been doing a multivitamin chew...Im not perfect at it..but I try to get it down every day. :) So i guess with that and the protien bullet thingys, and getting my fluids all down..that should get me to my appointment on the 9th. Still wondering if i can have sugar fee gum... I been chewing it, but do not want to do something I should not be doing.

HUGS and thank you!!
Linda

Linda,

Call Lauren at the office and clairfy with her.  Yes you are on per say liquids the first two weeks, but both pamplets I received from his office, said I could have yogurt, apple sauce, jello, pudding, all sugar free.  I was not on clear liquid even in the hosp, as I was able to have Jello.

But he has Lauren there for that reason, to help patients with the nutrition part.  You should have your packet of information that was given to you when you did all your pre-op work up blue folder, and they put the diet plan for home - 2 weeks, 3-6 weeks, and then 6 weeks and beyond.  But now your main thing is protein and liquids, and trying to per say have a meal, maybe with 1/4 cup of broth or cream of soup.

OMGosh, I love you guys...Im sorry, my head has been spinning. I remember exactly what the Dr. said..but I just dug through all my stuff, I had more than one of those blue folders and I for some reason did not think this was in here...but it is!! I have a paper from the NUT, and it is different than what Doc told me right before I left. So I should be safe going with what the NUT's paper sayd right? WOW...yaiy!!

He told me clear liquids for two weeks... the paper says FULL liquid and has all kinds of stuff i could have been trying on here!!!!!!! Im such a ditz.

Now what to do with ALL this glucerna!! because it is NOT on my list.

It says stage 1, home from hospital to two weeks...

says: Whey Protien Powder, Unjury..whatever that is...Necter Protien..sounds nasty..have no clue where to get it...and Isopure..thats the thing i bought one of, took a sip and threw it away..and went with buying a case of the bullet things that I actually like...grrrr. lol

It also has other things listed in that catagory, but it has those things I listed above circled...like she wanted me to have that instead of the other listed items that look yummy!! grr... like Atkins atvantage is not circled...low carb slim fast is not circled, sugar free Carnation instant breakfast..not circled...
then it says soupd... and says lowfat cream soup!!!  Im so happy!! brothn and boullion.
It has fat free or 1% milk! and Yougurt without seeds or whole fruit!!...yaiy..im in heaven..i hope it
s ok to go with this...

cooked cereals? cream of rice or cream of wheat..can I really do this..Im scared to death!!
same page still says... pureed/strained vegetables thinned with vegatable juice..and i can have vegetable juice!

and OMGosh at the bottom it does say I can have sugar free pupping or custard. so does that mean chocolate and what about the sugar free popsicles, is that chocolate too..?

I can't believe I starved myself from this stuff all this time..but at the same time.. Im not sure I would have been able to do much with it till about now..lol.  WOW.
I just hope this is ok...and when I go back..Im not seeing him, im seeing his PA. So... it's not like he's going to scold. me...but I really want to do what Im supposed to do...otherwise..why have the surgury..right?

The next page say weeks 3 to 6... so I guess if I start this now... I can do this for 2 good weeks and I should be good to go to the next page. I don't know why I did not dig through all my stuff in the blue envelope after getting home..just kinda threw stuff on the table there and started trying to do this thing...lol

Ok. I think I will live now.

Thanks
Linda (yes i was born blonde..kinda) lol :)

Trust me if I was on liquids for 2 weeks I might have died, applesauce was my savior as it gave me something slight to chew.

Isopure can be purchased at your local GNC and Vitamin Shoppe
Unjury I have only seen on the web only.
Nectar you can get at your local Vitamin Shoppe and web.
Bariatric Advantage some doctors offices carry their products or you can order online.

All the above are some brand name protein powders. Personally I like Nectar which is made by Syntrax. They have lots of different flavors for $10 you can get a trial pack of all the flavors. You want tp be careful when introducing something new to your diet. Also be prepared for times when you  maybe not be able to eat something you could just a few days before. LIke Isaid in my initial post to you that there are many on this board who will bend over backwards to help if they can. I believe someone already mentioned this to you but if you have trouble tolerating protein shakes you may want tp try adding pure Whey protein isolate to like low fat yogurt or SF pudding. We need 60-80 grams of protein and I have been told even more would be better. Again it is easy to get overwhelmed and forget about things. The board here is a great place to get our minds back on track and get the support we need for success. Do not feel embarassed that you forgot you had some of the informatiion you were seeking. Nobody thinks any less of you because we all have been where you are at the earlier stages of our journey. Be sure to follow the guidelines in your packet and if you have questions ask the nutritionist. Now the diet transtions is ideal and not everyone transtions at those intervals. I was on pureed foods for about a month because of gall bladder problems and the fact my pouch needed more time to heal. Even today, I have some trouble eating certain foods everything has to be fairly moist for me to even be able to get it down. Again use caution while transtioning your diet just because you did not tolerate something once do not rule it out completely. It has taken me 7 months just to be able to eat chicken. Good luck with your journey and communicate often on the board.

I am so sorry Linda that I have been MIA this afternoon and this evening.   I am usually on and off here all day long.   I have been busy....youngest son taking lifeguard and CPR classes to be a camp councilor at YMCA camp this summer and then my surgeon had his support group tonight.   Sounds like to me everyone gave you very sound advice though.    Remember to chew anything ALOT and to just sip your fluids.   Yes.....you can have all the yummy things on the list.   Good luck to you and we are ALL here to support and encourage you on your WLS journey.   Congrats on your surgery.

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

you have gotten some GREAT advise - I totally agree with Meggie - READ every lable you can find and if it doesn't have a lable eat with a lot of care - fruit will get a lot of people esp the first year or so

protein and more protein followed by water and movement, and more water and more movement - THAT WILL GET YOU HEALTHY!!!

I have said on here for years (just not as often since I started school and life is a lot insane even for me)
I had my surgery to be healthy and healthy people drink, eat and MOVE
I don't care if you move up and down the hall or the driveway or round and round the track - where ever you are start there and build.
that said you can not build muscles with out protein - 60 grams is what some docs say - my Nut looked at my activity level and lifestyle and told me 100 grams is my minimum - I have hit that almost every day for the last 4 years - took me about 2 months to work up to it

carry water EVERYWHERE with you -
also purse friendly foods to take with
cheese sticks
meat rolls
a few frozen shrimp with a smidge of ****tial sauce in a ziplock
half or a quarter of a ground meat patty
get a little insulated bag (snagged mine from a breast pump kit) and a small ice pack and pack food with you

jerky
nuts (chew VERY well)
if you can find a bar you tolorate grab those too

all of these are from a few weeks from now

you have learned EARLY what takes some poeple a long time - your body needs nutrition -
look for hungry girl products - some of them are good on sugar and fat - love their yogurts

agian read read, water movement and protien that is what will get and keep you healthy

you have made a great start keep it up
