Depression Medication

No matter what your surgeon tells you, do not stop taking your depression medication cold turkey.

I was told just to stop taking them. Don't do it.

One you go through withdrawals and thats the last thing you need when you are post-op.

Only you and your psychiatrist can decide when to stop or lower your medications.

Anytime a surgeon tells you to stop all your medications, find out why and how long they expect for you to stop them.  If they say you just won't need them,  get a second opinion.

Some surgeons believe that weight loss surgery fixes everything.  It doesn't.

I'm sadly learning of people committing suicide after their surgery usually around the one year mark even when they have been successfully losing weight.

If you feel sad, talk to someone.

Tell someone. Get help.  Don't be embarrassed.

When losing weight, the chemical change in your body is massive, so moods will shift.

Post-op, it's normal to feel regretful of the surgery.  Don't feel bad about that.  Some of it is related to the pain and the reality.  But it will get better.

It should be that way with all medication the perscribing doctor and you should be the only ones making the decision to lower or change your medication. Some psychiatric medication stopped abruptly can have deadly consquences as your body can easily become dependent on it. I can't believe a surgeon would recommend anything of that nature to a patient. I know my surgeon would never do such a thing. I still take all my medication I did before surgery and still utilize my CPAP machine until I am directed otherwise. I see my psychiatrist on a regular basis and we do discuss medication as well as other matters. In fact this last time he wanted to check my weight because he could tell I have lost a great deal since the surgery and wanted to compare it to the first appointment. We are the ones in-charge of our health both medical and mental health. Thank you for bringing this to the attention of the forum.
