I got a phone call a little bit ago from Dr. Kim's office.....bloodwork results are in.   My iron level is just a tiny bit low.    So I have to take 3 - 60 mg. bariatric advantage vitamins a day.    UGH.. I know that Iron constipates ya.   UGH   More problems !!!    I get my iron levels checked again in 3 months.   Hopefully they will be normal then !!!

Might want to add some Miralax in every day to help off set the constipation.  I take 2 prescription iron pills a day and finally am not anemic.  The Miralax in my shake every morning really seems to help out.

Vivian,

Were you taking iron before and have to increase the amount?  How much were you taking?

Also curious as to why you are shocked since it is one of the most common side-effects of our surgery.  Did your iron levels drop suddenly or something?  I know you have been under a ton of stress lately!

I have not taken any iron since my surgery.  Dr. Kim doesn't have his patients do iron if they don't have periods anymore.    At 4 yrs post op this is the very first time my vitamin levels have not been perfect.   Level is very low...just dropped a little bit but they want me to get it back up before it does drop too much.    I only have bloodwork done once a  year so not sure if it happened suddenly or not.

Ah, ok.  My doc has us take iron from the getgo - and I am post-menopausal also but he doesn't differentiate.

If you haven't taken it before then take Debbi's advice and add some Miralax to some juice or coffee or whatever.  Or 2 stool softeners.  I couldn't take the colace early one - burned my pouch something fierce - so I added Miralax to my protein coffee every morning.  It works great but it is expensive.  I tried the colace again at a year and tolerate it fine now so I take 2 every morning since I also take iron in the afternoons.  I can sure tell when I miss my colace

Goodness, Vivian.  I hope it's not too low as to delay your gallbladder surgery.  We want you feeling better soonest!

The doctors office said it is just a tiny bit low.   They just want me to build my level back up to the normal range so I won't have any future problems.    I will have my iron level checked again in 3 months.    They aren't worried about it that much right now.   I don't want to dare have to have iron infusions.   My blood work has always been perfect,   NEVER miss my vitamins at all.   I want to feel better too !!!!

I'm with Sarah, I don't see the "SHOCK" in your iron being a "TINY BIT LOW".  That's very nomal for WLS patients and shouldn't surprise any of us.  It's such a minor glitch in the road.  I'd be thankful if that's all they found wrong with me.  Trade ya my degenerative hip disease or knee with no cartilage in a heartbeat for a tad low iron. But this week of all weeks I'm thankful for all the blessings I have as well as my relatively good health compared to others who have real problems.

Amen to that Stephanie.   The shock is my bloodwork has ALWAYS been perfect !!!!   The doctors office said it isn't bad....just a tad bit low and they are having me do Iron as a preventative measure.    They will retest my iron in 3 months.
