I have just scheduled my RNY and am trying to gather all of the info I can on vitamins and supplements~~~
I really want to get off on the right foot so I thought that I should start taking the correct vitamins.
I know I need to take a multivitamin, Calcium, Iron and B12 but just which ones??  I mean there are all kinds of brands and such~~I'm finding it quite overwhelming.
There are the sites as well as my Dr. office that sell a "kit" of sorts that has all of the vitamins in it.  They are the Bariatric Advantage ones...is that name alot of hype to get people to purchase them.  Can I get some at WalMart or GNC??
Help~~~This is stressing me out.

No, you don't have to get them all at BA.  They are the most expensive but are a convenience for those who can afford them because they have everything you need.  Your surgeon should give you a vitamin schedule so all you have to do it take it to Wal Mart and find vitamins that are comparable.

Learn to read the labels and pay close attention to things like the TYPE of calcium (must be citrate, not carbonate) and the number of tablets per serving size.  I bought a bottle of chewable calcium citrate tablets that I really liked the flavor of and on the front it said "1000 mg".  I assumed it meant one tablet since it was a big, honking tablet LOL.  Turns out it was 4, so each only has 250 mg.  No biggie - I still like them and use them but I have to chew a lot more tablets than I originally thought.

I get mine at Wal Mart, Vitamin Shoppe, Amazon and Vitalady so shop around while you are waiting for your surgery date and it wouldn't hurt to start taking them now!

Good luck,
Sarah

I'd go to www.vitalady.com and get her vit. schedule for post op RNY. It's much cheaper to buy big bottles of individual vits, and you'll bet better lab results then trying to take BA vits. I found BA vits a HUGE disappointment, my labs SUCKED on them.

I buy some vits (A, D, E, K) from vitalady because her prices are very competitive, but I buy my multis and calcium from SAMS club. I get my super B complex, whey protein, and sublingual B, selinium from walmart.

Dr. B, or more accurately, Dr. T will tell you what to take and that you should take your iron and calcium an hour apart, but he didn't give me a schedule as such.  I get all my vits at Walmart or Target, wherever I am shopping the week that I run out of stuff. Chewable Iron is the only different one, I have to go to the Vitamin Shoppe for that one.

Enjoy your journey, and please keep coming back here.  The folx on this board are amazing, and have become part of my daily life, my family.

Grace & Peace,

Jenn

Good Luck on the RNY. My friends told me about Celebrate brand. I got them at Nutrtion Depot but not every   store has them.  I tried the Iron.VitC and the multi and they are chewable and taste good  and not huge pills. They also have a website.celebrate.com Hope this helps. Miss Jean

I am three yrs out and still use bariatric advantage........... Listen to your doctor they know best!!!! You may spend alot on vitamins, but you would be spending more in the hospital for not taking the proper vitamin, I personally would stick with what the doc wants you to take. All in all they are not much higher than a good vitamin from the health store, GOOD LUCK Robin

I have used BA, but now I use Celebrate. They taste better, have a better texture, and the calcium comes in 500mg pills so I only have to take 3 of them.  It's easier to buy vitamins formulated for WLS patients, because it's all in the pills and you don't have to think about it.  You can get some at walmart, but you have to look at each vitamin and make sure you are getting enough of each kind and the right types.
