I can't believe I did it, too

All these months I've read about people getting Last Meal Syndrome. I was sure I could easily avoid something so easy to understand. After all, it's not like we'll NEVER get to eat those favorites again!

I start my 2 weeks of pre-op liquids on Wednesday.

Well it started Sat. morning when DH and I went to breakfast. I had my regular Eggbeaters scrambled egg, 1 piece of bacon and 1 piece of wheat toast and was fine until DH laughingly asked if I wanted his last biscuit and gravy to hold me over for the 6 months. In his defense he doesn't normally offer me such things. I jumped on that thing like a duck on a june bug and it was delicious! Later that same day the sisters all voted to go to an Italian place where I had Stromboli....it's going to be a while before I can have anything like that, that was my reasoning! Days over, I should be over it, right?!?

Well, I woke up this morning craving chicken fried steak! I haven't given it more than a passing thought for over 6 months! So DH takes me to our favorite place, Hickory Hollow, where I ordered a child's order of CFS and mashed potatoes and gravy.

Yes, it tasted delicious but ya know what...it wasn't nearly as good as my memory of it! Surely wasn't worth how I've felt the rest of the day. And it could have been worse, I could have thrown caution to the wind and ordered the Plowman that hangs off the large dinner platter they serve it on but I didn't. The reason I'm most disappointed in myself is that I fell for it! I'm not going to starve to death in the next 6 months! I'll get to eat most of my favorites, at least those things I consider favorites right now, at some point in the future. I just thought I was mentally stronger than I apparently am! This whole mind game is going to be 90% of the ride.....isn't it?!?!

Dee, hang in there, you are right you'll eat some of those things again, although in smaller quantities.  The liquid diet I believe makes everyone afraid and their mind just goes crazy.

Start over from this point and eat your good, healthy, yummy food.  Good luck with the liquid diet.

You will get through it just fine.  Take a deep breath and keep telling yourself why you are doing this.
I will say a prayer for strength for you.

Yeah...that's why I'm so aggrivated with myself. I KNOW I'll one day get to have all those things. But I just spent 3 days worth of calories on stuff that wasn't that great!  LOL!

Dee, my "last meal" was a chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy and I loved every bite of it!

Yes, you will eventually be able to eat those things again, but never in that quantity.  I would be lying to you if I said I NEVER wanted to be able to eat a whole hamburger again or a normal sized meal, but thankfully it is few and far between.   The good far outweighs the bad.  No need to feel guilty!

We went to Carabba's today for lunch and my napkin slipped off my lap.  I reached down and picked it up - such a simple thing, right?  Pre-op I would have had to slide my chair over because my fat around my middle didn't "bend" and I had to lean over farther.  I sure didn't mind picking the chicken out of the pasta dish, having half a salad and a couple of bites of pasta - no sirree!!!

I'll be thinking of you this week as you start your liquid diet - it isn't fun, but not as bad as you think it is going to be.  And the 2 weeks will fly by!

Dee,

After 2 weeks on the liquid diet with never cheating one single time, 2 nights before surgery, I ordered a large pizza with pepperoni, black olives, green olives and mushrooms and I ate half of it.  The next day I had to do the colon cleanse.

That last splurge didn't hurt anything and truly helped my mental attitude.  BTW, we still order that pizza occassionally, now I eat one slice and a salad.  Big difference, still satisfying, and wearing size 12 jeans.

You'll be fine!

Stop beating yourself up!!  You are fine!!  But, I will disagree with the person who said the liquid diet was not that bad.  In my not-so-humble opinion, it was THE WORST part of the whole process.  Even the surgery was a piece of cake compared to that.  Just wanted to share that in case you have a tough time with the liquid diet, too.  I was in your shoes exactly a year ago.  Hard to believe how much things can change in a year!!

Take care!!

Dee,
We all have been there! I know what you mean. You do feel like it's the last supper and you start to crave all these foods that you haven't thought about in a long time. People tell you your taste buds will change and you start thinking that you better enjoy it now because you may never be able to eat it again. I went through that! But it will  be ok. You will get back to where you can enjoy some foods that you really enjoyed but not in near the quantity! I am so proud of what you have done so far. Just keep up the good work. You will get thru the liquid diet. It will not be fun, but just think about the rewards later.
Jerry
