Anyone know Dr. Patel?
I did not have Dr Patel but I love my RNY!!!! I am 2 yrs out have lost 165 pounds and gone from size 32 pant to a 6-8!! I have had lots of "hiccups" along the way but I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!!! Don't pay attention to my "hiccups" cause I am "special"--right guys!?! Start eating as a WLS patient now and start practicing new habits now --it will make life after surgery much easier!!
Congrats and we will make room for you on the "looser's" bench!!!

All I can say, is do you research and ask about aftercare. That, I have heard, is his weekeness.

Hi Krista,
Dr. Patel is my surgeon. I do not have any complaints except that his practice is extremely busy. The actual surgery and follow up after surgery was GREAT. He even called me at home personally to check on me. I attended his Corpus Christi support group for the first couple of years. Follow up is available, but you have to take advantage of it. You have access to a nutritionist and anytime I have had a question, I email Dr. Patel and he gets back to me usually that evening. His practice is extremely busy and I don't like the way they schedule their follow up appointments, you have to go and wait and it usually takes at least a couple of hours. But that's only once a year after the first year. Overall I've been very satisfied with my experience with Dr. Patel. He is an excellent surgeon.

My wife had a VSG with Dr. Patel six months ago and did extremely well (thus far down 75 lbs.). A friend of hers just had a RNY with Dr. Patel 2 months ago and she is down 50lbs. As far as skill level I found Dr. Patel and his partner Dr. JJ Gonzalez to be very good, thorough, and knowledgeable. That being said, I agree with Sean, his staff does seem overwhelmed at times and doesn't appear to be very organized. If you have patience to deal with the staff you should be fine. We are from Corpus Christi, but being from San Antonio you have other options available. Either way we were not disappointed at all. The best way to get results was to contact him directly like Vicky said. I think he also teaches Med. School at UTSA so that is not a bad prerequisite... IMO.
