I've found that many drunk guys (even ones with a little belly on them) like to taunt overweight guys. I'm not sure what to make of this behavior .. 
I remember back when I was only in my early 20s, and just "portly" in size .. I worked for an amusement co. as an apprentice pinball machine/pool table repair guy and mover .. One of the places we had to go to repair a pinball machine was a real hole-in-the-wall small town bar. My mentor, btw, was a top-shape ex Marine ..
When we had finished repairing the machine, I remember one of the drunks at the bar who had been observing us while we worked remarked, "what does the fat guy do?" ..
I don't remember what response, if any, we gave the lout . but I wish I had the insight and guts at the time to say, "keeping obnoxious drunks from interfering with my partner while he's trying to work,", or some such .

I'm not sure how old you are know, but you describe that incident as happening in your 20's. And it is something that has stuck in your head since. I really don't know why people are so rude. But I can only hope that what goes around comes around!
Why is it that we can come up with good "come back" lines after the fact?!

I am so sorry, sister.
To my experience, people say that **** when they are stupid and cannot come up with a better response or come back. They stumble when someone challenges their intelligence.
I know its hard- but let it go.
