Dr. Boyce was my surgeon for a lap DS . I was hospitalized about 2 months after my surgery and saw Dr. Williams on rounds. He also did a barium swallow in the office for me. He is as wonderful as Dr. Boyce. I found him to be very competent and caring.

Dr. Boyce in Knoxville is fabulous. I just had my consultation with him this morning. He told to me this morning that the prime reason he started doing the DS was because he found that his patients with a BMI of 50+ just simply were not getting the weight loss they wanted and were not able to keep the weight off with the RNY. He really likes the DS and is very pleased with the results. Your BMI most DEFINITELY qualifies you for the DS.

Melis, congrats on getting some decent insurance! I hope you will look seriously at the DS with an open mind. There is a lot of misinformatin about it out there. The DS has the highest percentage excess weight loss and best maintainence of that weight loss of any wls. It also has the best resolution of almost all comorbidities. And our lifestyle is, if anything, less stringent than RNY, in that we can eat any form of protein freely, and eat fat freely. We do have to watch carbs, but so does everyone else.
With the DS there is no dumping, no food getting stuck. We can take NSAIDs safely, which you can't do with RNY. We can drink liquids with meals. All in all, a much more normal pattern of eating than RNY.
The DS works well for all MO sizes, but is esp beneficial for people with bmi's over 50. There are excellent studies showing that weight loss is superior with the DS, and with your bmi being high (I can't imagine what - ok I will control myself and not call anyone names - person would have told you a bmi of 60 was not high) this is a great choice for you. With RNY, you are likely to lose about 50-60% of your excess weight. Believe it or not, that is considered "success" in the wls world, where if you lose over 50% of your excess weight you are a success. That would still leave you with a lot of excess weight, maybe even still MO. With DS, people lose on average about 80% of their excess weight AND keep it off. Weight regain is the dirty little secret of the RNY world.
I would strongly recommend you go to support groups for both operations. I think you'll see a big difference. You can also get a lot of good info on the DS on the DS forum here on OH, or at dsfacts.com. And, if you would like some great articles documenting the excellent longterm results of the DS both for weight loss and overall health, send me a pm.

Try Dr. Steven Boyce; he's located in Knoxville. He was the 7th surgeon to get the FACS in the country. He has a great reputation.

I'm 3 weeks and 2 days post op from the DS with Dr. Houston at Centennial. And I feel great!
I was able to throw out my blood pressure medicine as of yesterday. My BMI was 46 and I had comorbidities. I didn't have problems with my insurance or the surgeon. The only people who told me I needed to be over 50 BMI were some office staff personel when I called around to different practices.
I chose the DS because I've watched my cousin live with the DS for several years and my sister live with the gastric bypass for almost 3 years. I know I made the right choice for me. Some of the reasons were:
I wanted to be able to swallow pills not crush forever.
I wanted to keep my weight off forever.
I knew I would have a longer period to lose weight not stop after about 6 months.
These are just a few of my reasons. Take the time to find out what's right for you.
I have been to John's support group and plan on being at next Thursday's. It's really excellent and helped me pre surgery.
Good luck on your journey!

I had the DS witha BMI of 39. I am surprised that your Dr said your BMI is not high enough.
I am not quite three weeks out and since surgery I am no longer dependent on insulin. Just lost all high blood pressure meds yesterday. For what it's worth I would really consider the DS.
I love food and the thought of giving up my chocolate because of dumping, or a piece of steak stuck in my throat because of a stricture is enough to turn my head and walk away from the RNY.
I do want to wish you luck in whatever choice you go with.

My insruance covers DS for anyone with a BMI of 35 with a comorbid or 40+ My BMI is 47 and I am considered to be a heavyweight.
DS is especially good for those who have BMIs over 50, which you do. It will give you the greatest ability to lose and maintain that loss.
I would definitely check out www.dsfacts.com
I think you owe it to yourself to research all the surgical procedures before you decide which one is best for you. After all this is something you will need to live with for the rest of your life.
Also, I suggest spending some time on the RNY, DS and the Revision boards.
There are a lot of misconceptions about DS, especially about BMI issues and doctors telling patients they are too small etc. for a DS. Usually those doctors are not DS surgeons and want to keep the patient and so they give incorrect information (sometimes because they don't know better, other times they just flat out lie) in order to get the patient to agree to a surgery that they perform rather than one that may be the best for them. Its unfortunate but true. We often call these doctors *bait and don't switch* because they often claim they do the DS to lure you in and then make up all kinds of stuff about why you arent a good DS candidate and push RNY or something else.
I hope you come visit us on the DS boards and wish you the best of luck with whatever procedure you choose.

Just wanted to chime in and say that the DS works especially well for those with BMIs over 50. Mine was 53 at my surgery date. I'm a little surprised someone is telling you that 60 isn't a high enough BMI. There are plenty of people on the DS board who have BMIs of 35 that have had the procedure and done quite well.
Dr. Houston was my surgeon and I came all the way from Atlanta to have him as my doctor. The office staff is amazing (as it seems you ar finding out).
Please continue to investigate the DS, especially if you have comorbidities, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, etc.

Looking at your profile your BMI is over 60 that makes you a perfect candidate for the DS. Typically the weight loss is not as rapid with the DS as it is with the RNY and the window for loosing is longer. As far as lifestyle - the DS lifestyle is VERY easy as long as you follow - protein, water, vitamins - nothing else is off limits in moderation.
