Thanks Mel for reminding me.  This is great as a local option if you run out and do not have to wait for shipping.

Just a ?... With Sleep Apnea is there one surgery that is better then another? I will be honest I had 2 small surgeries in 2007 with apnea and no machine and did fine. I was just curious what would be things that would make you a better candidate for one then the other? I was leaning toward DS after hearing insurance would not cover stand alone VSG and that my weight loss and sustainability would not be that great. I have seen what my sister goes through with dumping so that is another thing that I hear is different with DS so that is a plus. I am more interested in longevity of loss and not as much the most I can lose. I really just want to get to wear I feel somewhat able to maintain a normal activity level. I was thinking I always felt good at about 200. I know that still is kinda heavy so how do you know what the right goal is for you? Thanks for all the help Pam... just know it is appreciated! You and Sherry have no idea how helpful you have been and how encouraged I feel! :D

Yes, I think that I will see what he says. I prefer to have DS but we will see what he suggests. I think the best thing was her saying that she had lap band and had the revision and that confirmed for me the the VSG itself would likely for me just lead me to more surgery. I think ideally that she gave me the best info with what she had in front of her. I don't mind that in her opinion she felt I would be on the smaller side. I just think that since it wasn't the DR that I would want to see what he says. I plan to ask for DS and Dr Houston and see from there. The biggest thing about all this is I am working on the journey again after having given up. WHere ever it leads I am sure will be for the best. The point is at least there is someone out there to help me at the hospital with the insurance who actually seems to care about what happens and I have more than one option. I like that. But you are right in all reality the Dr has the finally say in if I will be able to have the DS and so I will just wait and see. I still have a bit of time before I will probably even see him. Exciting though!

The choice of procedure is made between the patient and surgeon. Dr. Houston will review the good, bad and potentially ugly for each procedure.

I was talking to the financial rep at Centennial and she had indicated I was too small but may not realize my BMI is so high she was for my height and weight. I really wanted the DS until she said that. I think it is the best option for me because I have seen how dumping can be and I don't think I would be happy if I was always afraid if I had any sugar I would be like that but if it was my only choice I would live. I also have to say I like steak too but the biggest thing is the longevity for me. I want it to havelongevity. I also want to be able to eat meat and not choke. I think I like the idea of not so much being done to my intestines also. To me, my sister has dont ok with hers but she does have dumping if she eats sugar and she does have issues still with overeating and vomiting. She has B12 issues. She is over 2 years out. I just don't want to look like skin and bones later. I think she lost too much and others do too but just our opinion I guess. The funny thing is that someone at my previous job kept telling me to look into it, the DS because she did not think I should do the RNY and when I started to I realized I liked the idea alot better. I know in CA they had said they would likely require it for my BMI.  I am working on my paperwork now and think I will probably go ahead and ask for DS and see what Dr Houston says. I really think it is the best choice for me and he is the one who gets the final go ahead anyway. I hear he is fabulous! I will hop on the DS boards soon. I am pretty content. I have a friend at work who lost 250 and she seems to think looking into something other than RNY is the best idea as well. She had talked to me about sleeve but I don't think as a stand alone procedure that would work for me. Thanks for all the great info everyone!

Ditto what KittenLove said.

I had a lap DS and subsequent gall bladder removal by Dr. Boyce. Both his medical expertise and bedside manner are outstanding. He truly has his patient's best interest at heart .He has even had his staff call to check on me for a medical situation totally unrelated to my WLS.

I didn't need pain medication after leaving the hospital for either surgery. I believe this was due to Dr. Boyce's gentleness and skill as a surgeon.I did have alot of nausea post op and did not progress my diet as quickly as I could have.

He and his staff have an excellent  informational seminar on WLS and will stay to answer questions. They also have a comprehensive aftercare program. Everyone in the office wants you to be a success.

There are several support groups that meet in the area. You will be able to meet people in all phases of their journey.

Another happy Houston patient chiming in - Please read everything you can about the DS. Far less chance of regain than with any of the other surgeries. You definitely meet the criteria for the surgery. I can't speak highly enough about Dr. Houston's staff (Hi Pam!!) and the care I got at Centennial.
