As I found out, the nicatine basically stays in your system. But if you are referring to quitting for surgery, allow yourself 1-2 months of smoke free for surgery. Mine required one month free of smoking. Safer when being put to sleep. They will most likely do a blood test just prior to or the morning of surgery to see if you have any nicatine in your system. Mine did the blood test. If it's in your system, your surgery may be cancelled or they will have to ventalate you. The best thing to do is quit, since you are looking at having surgery for a healthier life. It's hard but Dum Dum suckers help and a clean ashtray near by to lay the sucker in when not "smoking" it. LOL, it really helped me. Best of luck. You can do it. Kathy
