Misty, Missy has the right idea. Is your PCP is full support of you having this surgery? That is the question you need to ask him/her. If not get a new one and fast. The day I was told from my PCP that I had bone marrow disease, leukemia, he wrote out and had it typed that very day for me to have the gastric bypass as it was medically necessary. The first letter he wrote a year ago, just said that I would benefit by having the surgery. Now it's medically necessary. He listed the problems I am having with the diabeties, and all the comorbilities that I suffer with. That is what is basically needed in the PCP's referral letter. Has to state Medically Necessary and list the comorbilities. Then when the letter as well as your records are finally submitted, they will see that the surgery is necessary.
Without that, you won't get approved. If you see other Dr.'s regarding problems due to your weight, get that Dr.'s letter also and your files. I have one from every Dr. I have to see plus copies of all my records. I have sleep apnea, so I have had 3 sleep levels last year as it kept changing, I had those reports plus my Ears, nose, and Throat Dr. who does the sleep apnea readings wrote a letter that it was medically necessary, one from my GI dr. regarding my hiatal hernia, my heart Dr. because of my congestive heart disease. The more I had the better. In your case I would say the same thing, get everything you can.
Now that you know where the problem lies, get it taken care of. See your patience paid off. Now ask your PCP if they are for the surgery, and if they are, get that letter done. I have heard of insurance companies taking weeks, others only a week to be approved. What type do you have?
