I was wondering if there are any other members that have been self pay in Tennessee. My insurance has exclusion for all weight loss surgeries even those deemed necessary. I am trying to decide on a doctor. I am planning on getting a loan for the operation I am also trying to decide what type of surgery would be best for me. I have done so much research it is coming out my ears but it is still a hard decision especially when it is coming out of your own pocket... I would really like to hear from someone in Tennessee that might have gone through a similar situation.

Hello Tabitha, I am self paying for the WLS. My insurance denied me twice and now has an exclusion. I appealed my denial as far as I could go..to the TN Insurance Commish. I am going to be having the RNY done by Dr Stephen Boyce,in Knoxville,TN. I have so many co-morbidities that I have been told by both PCP and Diabetic MD,if I don't have surg.,I will be dead within 2 years. So self pay was the only choice I have now. Hope this helps.

I was not self-pay, but I did have the duodenal switch 18 months ago. And from my own experience and from everyone I have talked to, it is much better than any other type if surgery. Since you are paying for it yourself, you might as well have the best!
