at Centennial in Nashville. October 5th happens to be my real birthday and my husband asked me what I wanted to do and so I told him. It took me a while to convince him but he agreed that if that is how I wanted to spend my 30th birthday, he would go with me. If you have been to one of the seminars at Centennial, please let me know what I am to expect and how freaked out will my husband be? He is skeptically supportive, but if I get cleared for surgery in the next 5-6 months, we will have to put off having children for 18 months and that is a bummer. This seminar is the first thing I have done to try to get cleared so what am I facing? I have Bc/Bs select and a VERY unsupportive PCP so he is not even someone I can request anything from apart from the actual records themselves. Thanks- Bryna

Hi Bryna, I would first find a Dr. PCP who is in favor of the surgery as you will need a letter for the insurance company that it is medically necessary for you to have the surgery. You will also need a supportive PCP, as he/she will be a big part of your life. If the one you have isn't supportive, dump, and find one who is. Mostly at a seminar or any seminar as each Dr. has their own seminars but they are basically all alike. The slides they show are what different types of surgeries are available to you. The Dr. explains who it will be done, it's about 1-2 hours. They let you know what you have to do be get qualified. You receive a packet to fill out in order to get an appointment. Be sure to sign in before you leave. Some times if the seminar is during the morning, you will see the Dr. that day. Get records, letters from all your dr.s stating that it's medically necessary or your insurance may not help you. Just a brief idea, what your PCP will have to get scheduled for you is, a sleep study to see if you have sleep apnea, if you do then another appointment will be set up for you to have a sleep level test to be fitted with a cpap. Nutrionist classes, psych eval for eating disorders, (warning if negative forget about having that surgery). I've gone thru 7 Dr.'s because of a negative psych eval, rather 6 because of that, Dr. Oxley in Franklin, TN only requires if you are already seeing councelling, just need a letter from the shrink/psych. Mine wrote that the surgery would be a benefit for me and my depression. A letter from a heart Dr. if you have a problem with your heart, he will have to write a letter giving you medical clearance and that it is medically necessary that you have this surgery. I don't know what insurance you have, but call them and ask them if there are any exclusions in your policy. You may get denied, always appeal. If there is any problems with your insurance, email obesitylawyers.com. They can help you get approvel. I can only wish you the best, stay with this message board. It's so full of love, support, recipes. Under Find A Doc at the top of the page, click on that and the Dr. you want, check what insurance companies your Dr. has accepted. May God Bless you. Kathy (Happy Birthday on the 5th)

Bryna, Chances are you may suffer from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). This syndrome can not only make losing weight near impossible, but it is a leading cause of infertility. One of the things about this is weight loss really, really helps with conceiving, so don't look at it as having to wait 18 more mos agfter surgery, but look at it as getting healthy as you can before you do conceive. Best of luck to you. Kelly

This is strange! I am going to the same seminar Oct. 5 and my 30th birthday is Oct. 14. Looks like we are in a similar situation?? My husband is supportive of the surgery, but I don't think he will be at the seminar with me. We have two children. I just had my second child 9 weeks ago. I am so consumed with this surgery now, I can't think of anything else. I am going to have to swith ins. companies just to get one that covers the surgery. Then I will have to work on approval. I'm just starting the process so I'm not sure how it all works. I just know I've been thinking about it for years, but wanted to wait until I had children. A girl I work with is 2 1/2 mo. post op and has lost 50lbs. so I am so inspired by her!! Maybe I will see you at the meeting!

I am looking forward to the seminar. I canceled it and then signed up again. I figured that going will not hurt. My husband is skeptical of my having the surgery by the same people who put on the seminar. He doesn't trust it. I figured that we will see what happens and then if it looks like I can get scheduled soon, we will put off having children until after the surgery. If not, then we will try for child number one and then have the surgery and child number two after the surgery. I am comfortable with that decision and nothing that I have said to anyone in my house (meaning parents and husband) seem to try to persuade me to do otherwise. Ultimately it is all up to God and His will for my life. I am just looking forward to the next 30 years more if I am half the woman I am today!!!! Hopefully I will see you there. Do not be shy about coming up to me if you see me. I do not knwo how many people will be there but the closer I get, the more excited I get. I will be with a cute bald guy (my hubby) and I have long auburn colored hair. See you tomorrow!! Bryna
